We're thrilled to have Annie Sloan, one of the world's most popular experts in decorative painting, join us at both our 2013 Toronto Fall Home Show and our Vancouver Home + Design Show.
Annie has developed an incredible paint brand called Chalk Paint; this fast-drying miracle paint can be applied to wood, concrete, metal, matte pasting, earthenware, and much more indoors or out!
DIY: The Limed Oak Look

THE STEPS
Oak is a rough wood with a deep grain that traps paint, which is why very old whitewashed oak often has a soft gray/silvery look about it. This look is very beautiful as it shows the distinctive decorative grain of the wood. Nowadays, new oak furniture is often covered in a varnish that needs to be stripped before painting in order to reveal it's wonderfully grainy texture (Color Recipes, 132-133).

- Paint over the surface with white one small area at a time so that none of the paint dries before you reach step 2.
- As the paint dries, gently wipe it off so that it is just left behind in the grain. If the paint is too dry, add a spit of water to the cloth.
- If there are any wood carvings on the piece, apply clear wax to it with a brush. Otherwise, use a clean, dry cloth to work a small area of clear wax in at a time.
- Let dry, and enjoy!
This project and more can be found in Annie's awesome book Color Recipes for Painted Furniture. You could WIN a copy of Colour Recipes for Painted Furniture and more.
