Design Style: Defining Space With Personality

From coastal to contemporary to country, there is a vast range of interior design styles to make your own. Some are drawn to the geometric shapes and mirrored accents of art deco design, while others are more comfortable in a space that is minimalist and modern.

If you aren’t sure what your style is, look around your home and try to find some commonalities. Most designers will say that a decorating style is a reflection of your individual personality. Take a look through your closet, your jewellery box and your existing pieces to point you in the right direction.

Both the Calgary Home + Design Show and Vancouver Home + Design Show will feature top design talent showcasing their signature style. When we asked our personalities about their go-to decorating techniques, we received almost as many responses as there are styles! Clearly design preferences don’t fit into a box, so don’t be afraid to dream up your own unique approach.

For example, decorator Christine Friend of Friendly Decorator defined her signature design style as “classic modern with a touch of red, if my client lets me!”

On the other hand, interior designer Marie-Claire Williams of Cardel Homes called her style “vintage chic,” adding, “I love the soft, feminine feel of a space with vintage pieces that seem already lived in.” Her co-worker, Clare Gardner, takes a different approach, opting for a style that is “modern, classic and a little bit masculine.”

Just to keep things interesting, realtor Todd Talbot, co-host of W Network’s Love It or List It Vancouver, referred to his style as “west coast contemporary,” flush with “natural light, clean, linear angles and using natural products like wood and stone.”

At the end of the day your design style can really be whatever you want it to be! Base your definition around the pieces, colours and textures you are naturally drawn to and you’ll be decorating like a pro in no time.
