Whether it's weekly, monthly or annually, there are several things you can do to maintain your heating and cooling equipment.  Check out Carrier's helpful tips below!

Ongoing / Weekly

1. Check to make sure there’s at least two feet of clearance around outdoor air conditioning units and heat pumps. During the spring, summer, and fall remove debris such as leaves, pollen, and twigs from top and sides of outdoor the outdoor unit and do not allow the lawn mower to discharge grass clippings onto the unit.

2. Never close more than 20% of a home’s registers/vents to avoid placing unnecessary strain on the HVAC system. Also make sure the heating registers/vents are not blocked by beds, furniture, carpeting or drapes to ensure proper air-flow.

Calendar3. In the summer months set your thermostat as close as possible to the outside temperature while still remaining comfortable. The smaller the difference between the outside and inside air temperatures, the lower your cooling costs.  In the winter months set your thermostat as low as you can and still feel comfortable, especially while you are sleeping. This can result in heating bill savings.

4. If you don’t have one already, consider installing a programmable thermostat, allowing you to preset temperatures for different times of the day. This will ensure that your system only works when it needs to, resulting in lower monthly operating costs.

Monthly / Seasonally

1. Inspect, clean, or change air filters once a month in your central air conditioner, furnace, and/or heat pump. A dirty filter can increase energy costs and damage your equipment, leading to early failure. Buy a better filter if you haven’t already. The new high-efficiency pleated filters have an electrostatic charge that works like a magnet to grab the tiniest particles — even those that carry bacteria.

2. To get the most out of your system, make sure you keep the baseboard heaters, warm-air registers and radiators free of dust, dirt, and pet hair by cleaning them regularly.

Annually

1. Keep your cooling and heating system at peak performance by having a NATE-certified HVAC technician do annual pre-season tune-ups. It’s best to check the cooling system in the spring and the heating system in the fall. This is the biggest step to preventing major malfunctions and prolonging system life.

2. Ensure that your outdoor air-conditioning unit or heat pump is on firm and level ground or pads.

3. Replace the battery in your home’s carbon monoxide detector.
