Neutrals

A common theme in luxurious decorating is an emphasis on neutrals. Why? Neutrals tend to lighten a room, which instantly makes it more open, airy, and welcoming. When decorating a space, avoid dark and heavy colours, which can close things off, making everything appear smaller and dreary. Instead, focus on using beige and off-white tones. Try keeping most of the bigger aspects of your room, such as walls, couches, and floors, as neutral as possible.

Contrast

Having a room that is complete monochromatic tends to look bland and unappealing. When choosing the colours for your room, decide on a contrasting accent piece that will be an eye-catching pop of colour. If you're struggling to find a colour that complements the rest of your room, find a colour wheel with the colour of your room on it. The colour opposite it on the wheel will be the perfect complement to your space.

If you're unsure about a colour, find flowers that are the same tone and put those in the space as a trial. They can be switched out easily, and ensure you don't have to spend money on accessories that don't complement the rest of the room. Once you've decided on a contrast accent colour, incorporate it with pillows, throws, lamp shades, small detail decor pieces, or even an area rug. For the design daring, try painting a whole wall a statement colour as an accent.

Bold Statements

Having a statement piece in your room will serve as a focal point. It draws your eyes in and creates intimacy in the room. Including a bold statement in your decorating also means you can leave the rest of the room fairly minimal; the ultimate high-end chic. Our favourite bold statement pieces are big, colourful paintings, bold patterned area rugs, and unusual light fixtures.

Create a Larger Looking Room

Nothing looks more luxurious than a spacious, well-decorated room. That being said, we don't all have unlimited space at our disposal. If you're struggling to open up a room, here are several tips to create your ultimate space.

First, anything that draws the eyes upward elongates the room and gives the effect of higher ceilings. Accomplish this in three ways:
  1. Hang your floor length window coverings a couple of feet above the windows
  2. Strategically place shelves higher than you normally would
  3. Consider painting the upper half of  your wall white or a lighter colour
Second, when trying to create the effect of a more spacious room, avoid dark colours and heavy fabrics at all cost. These close up the space and immediately make the room stuffier.

Lastly, mirrors are the old design stand-by for good reason: they work. A large mirror acts as a second window and creates the illusion of double the space.

So now that you know all there is to know about forging a more expensive looking room, are you ready to tackle our contest? Find out now!

QUESTION #2: Gennith's Drab Drapery Blues
Questions submitted by Alison A. from Chantilly, Virginia:

What is your design dilemma?
"I live in a 900 sq foot apartment in downtown Silver Spring. I have a sliding glass patio door that desperately needs some help. I currently have two curtain panels that are a tad too short. I would love something dramatic- perhaps a floor to ceiling type drapery. Similar to what you might see in a luxury hotel. But not quite sure how to achieve this look. I've looked online but haven't found the best solution. Would greatly appreciate any suggestions!   - Gennith J.
Expert advice from La-Z-Boy:

"
Hello Gennith,
I've got several suggestions for you to achieve your desired look:
  1. Analyze function first!  This will eliminate some choices - Do you need privacy? Do you need to block light? Do I need to worry about sun damage to the fabric?  What pieces in the room are not working or will leave?
  2. Fabrics/Prints -  Look at what you have -  If major upholstery is print, then use solid or vice-verse.  What colors would you like to pull?  What styles do you need to work with- are you more traditional? Contemporary? Ask yourself these questions.
  3. Length - Most ready made panels are 63-144.  Going long is very in style.  If you can't decide, try to go long- it will be easier for you to work with.  Going too short will look obvious!  Do you want it to hit the floor or let it run onto the floor?  Both are an options as both are very popular.  When it comes to width, make sure that it completely closes as well as has enough slack to not pull them too tight! Finally, hang higher than the frame.  This give the illusion on a larger window.
Look at La-Z-Boy for ideas to complete your full space!  We have over hundreds of fabrics to choose from, perhaps we can coordinate a chair to your new window treatments?"          - La-Z-Boy Expert

QUESTION #2: Alysha's Empty Dining Dilemma
Questions submitted by Alison A. from Chantilly, Virginia:

    What is your design dilemma?
Marika Chairside Table"My dining room looks empty. Right now I have a long table and six chairs in it and it looks a little empty. I would like to add a hutch or sideboard but I feel like it would end up right against the table since the room isn't very big. Basically my dilemma is that the room isn't small enough just for a table but is also not large enough for a full dinning set. Any suggestions on how to make the room look a bit more furnished? There is a long wall on the one side that looks the most bare. Please help!"        - Alysha A.
    Expert advice from La-Z-Boy:

    "
    Hello Alysha,
Since a full sized hutch may be overwhelming for your space try a small console or a sofa table. A slimmer piece won’t swallow your space but it will help fill in the blank spots. Head over to la-z-boy.com to find your closest store to have one of our fantastic designers come help you complete your space."       - La-Z-Boy Expert
This year La-Z-Boy is bringing refreshingly sophisticated furniture trends to the Capital Home Show (Sept 20-22).  Today, they're helping us tackle the living room, and online shopping...

      • What is the most challenging part of decorating a living room?  How can it be simplified?
        • Think about how the space is going to be used.  Is it a museum, or is the space going to be heavily lived in?  Focus on those details.  To simplify, ask this questions; What will this room look like between 7-8 p.m.? Think about the family dynamics and lifestyle, then work with the flow of activity, not around it!
      • What are some La-Z-Boy items that can help with home organization?
        • La-Z-Boy offers lots of pieces that offer storage.  For example, cocktail tables with lift top storage and/or hidden compartments and storage ottomans just to name a few.  We sell desks and credenzas, bookcases, and much much more.
      • How can www.La-Z-Boy.com help homeowners with the design/decor process?
        • La-Z-Boy is proud to have a user friendly website.  On www.la-z-boy.com, customers can look at upholstery furniture online, try out different fabrics to get an idea of their preferences; research trends; read about design inspirations; get connected to other areas of information with links to our sister companies, get service and warranty info, and much more in the comforts of their one homes.

      • What will La-Z-Boy be bringing to the Capital Home Show this year?
        • La-Z-Boy will be highlighting today's top design trends.  Designers with credentials will be on site to answer all types of design questions.  We'll be showing off the fabulous items available to anyone who shops in a La-Z-Boy Store.

      QUESTION #2: Alison's Wall Worry
Questions submitted by Alison A. from Chantilly, Virginia:

      What is your design dilemma?
Television"My living room has one very large wall and I am having a hard time trying to make it look like so the room is not empty. The only thing against the wall is the TV and cabinet, layout wise furniture does not work against the wall. I thought of putting art on the wall but wont that look strange next to the TV?"             - Alison A.

      Expert advice from La-Z-Boy:

      "Hello Alison,
Large walls can be quite a difficult design challenge. In your case I would recommend looking at some of the large étagères we offer to frame your TV console. Wall Art can look great on the same wall as a television, I suggest having one of our designers come out to your home and help you select the right art and or furniture pieces to really make that wall a statement. Head on over to the La-Z-Boy website to find the store closest to you!"       - La-Z-Boy Expert

      QUESTION #1: Color-Confused Karey
Questions submitted by Karey T. from Chesapeake, Virginia:

      What is your design dilemma?
"Our living room feels so blah. Our sofa and love seat are olive green. The walls are painted a light tan and the carpet is tan. The only light comes from a small window on the side of the fireplace and the window in the door on the other side of the fireplace. Both of these windows face a screened in (and roofed) porch so the room is always dim. Is there any way we could paint (least expensive) the walls to liven up. Colors? Patterns? Help??!!"       - Karey T.
      Expert advice from La-Z-Boy:
      "Hello Karey,
An easy solution would be to purchase some throw pillows and art work with light colored backgrounds. The light colors will trick the eye into thinking the space is airier than it appears. Also, if you are able to paint the ceiling of the covered porch in a white the light will bounce off of that and make the room appear brighter as well. The third thing I can suggest is a strategically placed lamp. Lighting is the easiest way to brighten up your space. One of our designers would be able to help you make those selections. Hop on over to the La-Z-Boy website to find your closest store!"       - La-Z-Boy Expert

To help you with your quest to live comfortably, La-Z-Boy is giving us their take on today's most popular decor and design trends.

What design/furniture trends is La-Z-Boy coveting this season?

This season, La-Z-Boy is featuring several fabulous trends.  Our 'Green with Envy' trend is geared towards lively, radiant and lush home furniture and accessories.  Also popular, our 'Retro Rewind' trend that highlights refreshing baby blues and soft pastels.

Finally, one of La-Z-Boy's big trends is mixing the old with the new.  Reclaim it, reinvent it, and reuse it!  We're really putting an emphasis on introducing elements of texture in your home's decor.

When decorating a blank room, what’s the first step a homeowner should take?

At La-Z-Boy, we always like to consider traffic patterns and overall space when working with homeowners.  While many people think style, color, fabrics and fashion first, it's important to have a grasp on the space.  Remember to think about the traffic flow first so that the final elements added don't cause any disappointment.
