We're so excited to have Leanne Lee, the Diva of DIY and our 2015 Home + Garden Trendsetter, joining us at the Jacksonville Home + Patio Show, March 5-8 at the Prime Osborn Center. Leanne has a gift for turning trash into treasure and seeing the potential in used items, regardless of their condition. She can do things with paint and fabric that we can only dream of - until now! Leanne will be sharing her DIY secrets at the show and she's let us in on her thrift store style. Read on to learn what she looks for at a consignment shop and how you can start dumpster diving like a pro!
"One of my favorite 'hobbies' is heading to my local ReStore and finding treasures to upcycle for my home. This is a great way to redecorate without breaking the bank. For those of you who are not families with the term 'upcycling', it means simply taking something and making it better. This can be done with paint, upholstery, add-ons, etc.
If you have yet to step foot into your local ReStore, Goodwill, Salvation Army, or other thrift store, please visit one soon. Even if you don't purchase anything, you can get an idea of what is available for pennies on the dollar. Then, the next time you're working on a project you'll know where to head for the pieces you need!
One of my favorite items at the ReStore is old cabinet doors and drawers. There are so many projects that you can create with these, like Chalkboards, Under-Bed Storage, and Serving Trays.
You'll also find shelves and shelves of 'knick-knacks'. You might find some that are beautiful just the way they are, but it's likely that you'll also come across some that have seen some wear and tear. Don't let that put you off, most can be easily updated. I like to update figurines with spray paint, but there are lots of routes you can go.
I'm also willing to bet that you'll find Christmas ornaments. Try upcycling these into Decorative Balls. They can be pretty costly at the home decor store, but you can make them at a fraction of the cost when you upcycle!
Believe it or not...brass is coming back! Not buying it? You can use silver or gold to update the look of junky thrift store candles. Check out what I did with some here.
What about glass jugs, vases, vessels, decanters, and more? Try making a lamp!
And then there's the furniture section. This is the first place I head when I walk into my local thrift shops. You never know what you will find! In fact, I recently came across this desk. It was $10 and I had to have it. While I wasn't necessarily looking for one, I knew it could be great. The structure of the desk was in excellent condition - sure the rest of it had seen better days, but that's what made it so inexpensive. Do you see the detail on the desk and the curves it has? It's going to be stunning with a little bit of effort and some paint!
One of the projects that I'm so glad to have been a part of was the Habitat for Humanity ReStore Tiny House. I decorated the entire Tiny House with items from the ReStore and it turned out amazing! Fresh Flowers

When the days are longer and the air is warm, throw open
your windows and enjoy the days of summer. Bring the fresh look of summer into
your home. Add fresh flowers and plants to any room, from your bedroom, living
room and even the guest room. Enjoy colourful, cheery, summery bright
colours. Live with what you love!

Summertime = DIY Time

Upcycling continues to be contagious with the ease of the
summer months. There are so many great
upcycle ideas and inspirations out there.
Upcycling has been
done for years, but it's only with the recent do-it-yourself movement that it
earned a title. It's like recycling, but the goal is making the item even
better than it was before. It was love at
first sight with these Mason Jars painted with Miss Mustard Seed's milk paint in
boxwood and curio and torn napkins added to
cover part of the jars.
A favourite summer retail
therapy stop is a Restore, that inspires the DIY in all of us - you'll never
know what you'll find.
Summer Salad: Yellow Couscous Salad with Pomegranate Dressing

Simple and
easy summer salad. The perfect recipe for your couscous obsession: yellow couscous salad with pomegranate
dressing. Couscous readily absorbs the
flavours of the ingredients that are added to it, so what better way to
celebrate summer flavours than with mint and pomegranate.

Did you know
that couscous is not a grain at all, but made from semolina (the hard grains
left after milling durum wheat) that's combined with flour, salt and water (and
sometimes roasted) to form tiny, pasta-like pellets?

Fresh fruit obsession, a perfect addition to summer. The summer season brings us lots of

frozen into ice cubes livens up your simple summer drinks.

Who wouldn't want to add a fab new upcycled piece to their home? Take on a little upcycle project this weekend, start by visiting your local thrift shop! Our favorite is the Habitat for Huminity ReStore, the perfect place to find new and used furniture and building materials for a fraction of the retail price. Find the perfect item (like a plain folding door), harness some creative energy, and dig into your toolbox!

Fresh off its much-hyped debut in 2012, the Ultimate Upcycle Challenge returns to the Vancouver Home + Design Show with an Unhinged mission for Vancouver’s top bloggers, artists and designers. Challenge participants will be raising funds for Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver by upcycling – or repurposing – doors sourced from the Vancouver ReStore by selling their pieces in a silent auction.
You will have the opportunity to bid on
your favourite piece at the Habitat
for Humanity Greater Vancouver booth at the Vancouver
Home + Design Show. But before the hot ticket bidding war begins, let’s get
to know the seven handpicked participants that were tasked with creating
beautiful home décor items out of old doors for under $50.

Sarah Bancroft, co-founder and editor-in-chief
of VitaminDaily.com, Canada's premiere lifestyle
magazine, is all about matters of style and shopping. She has appeared on TV
programs such as “Canada’s Next Top Model,” “Fashion File” and Britain’s “Big
Boutique,” emcees high profile fashion events and writes features for Canada’s
National Post.

With a penchant for texture, colour and
bold aesthetics, Sarah Bancroft transformed her door into a collage-homage to
living well. Capturing trends from fashion, food and design, this art piece
will inspire interesting dinner party conversation for years to come.

Celina Dalrymple opened Fabulous Furnishings in 2001 to
satisfy her love of creative design and beautiful fabrics. Practically raised
in her mother’s upholstery shop, she acquired an early appreciation for furniture,
craftsmanship, fabric, colors, and hard work. Shortly after moving to
Vancouver, having her own studio space to do upholstery seemed like a natural
step.
Inspired by her passion for upholstery and
high-drama design, Celina Darlrymple crafted this eye-catching art piece from
scraps of vinyl left over from past projects. Install Miss Monroe in an
interior doorway for that trés modern touch.

Tazim Damji, founder and blogger at BeingTazim.com and LoveSnapMake.com, is a
self-proclaimed design obsessed “geek at heart”. Her writings cover adventure,
lifestyle, DIY and décor. With a passion for social media that has grown past
hobby-status, Tazim runs a virtual assistant business for clients around the world.
Seeking
to provide inspiration for people looking to maximize their interior design on
a dime, Tazim repurposed her door into a piece ideal for the entryway. Complete with hooks, a comfy seat and mirrors to scope your kicks
before leaving the house, this upcycler’s dream is the ultimate in stylish
storage.

Juila Dilworth, lifestyle reporter and DIY
columnist at 24Hrs Vancouver, is not
only a repurposing pro but also last year’s winner of our Ultimate Upcycling
Challenge. Transforming her door into the ultimate organization unit for
everything from bedroom knickknacks to bathroom accessories, Julia capped it
all off with a mint-frosted ombre painting treatment to keep you sorted in
style.

Rebekah Gusway, assistant manager at Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver
by day and artist by night, pursues a creative path with unique bits and bobs
found in the Vancouver ReStore. With
a passion for repurposing and an eye for hidden treasures, Rebekah Gusway gave
her old door a new lease on life as a beautiful handcrafted vanity. Perfect for
everything from an eclectic boudoir to a child’s bedroom, Rebekah’s creation
marries old-school glamour with homey charm.

Mitra Mansour and Lindsay Duthie, designers, collaborators and “hactivists” at Creative Room, are the
masterminds behind YOUxBUILD, a collaborative movement towards open source
design and sustainability. With the support of UBC’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture wood-shop facilities, the dynamic duo created a set of flat-pack pieces that can be
assembled into a coffee table and two types of stools.

In celebration of the Toronto Fall Home Show’s 25th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of Habitat for Humanity Toronto, 25 celebrity experts and emerging style, décor and DIY bloggers are took part in the 2nd annual Upcycle Challenge: Unhinged. Experts sourced and repurposed doors from Habitat for Humanity Toronto ReStore into functional items or hand painted pieces of art. The doors were on display throughout the Fall Home Show in Toronto in the Habitat for Humanity booth until Sunday October 6, 2013.
The entries below were voted on by the public and are displayed in their final ranking order below!
