The DIY Planter Challenge is in full swing and the competition is getting fierce! To help get in the spring spirit and prepare for summer, Marketplace Events team members crafted some fun planters, and now the online voting has begun. Whose planter will receive the most votes and be crowned the winner? It's up to you (and our other Facebook fans) to decide.
Before you visit our Facebook page and vote for your favorite, why not try making your own planter? We've already showed you how to make Karen A.'s printed pipe, but what about William Brown's perfect printer? The Landscape Coordinator for Marketplace Events and owner of William H. Brown Landscape Inc. made this unique piece using an old printer. Here's how you can make one.
What you'll need:
Step 1: Find an old printer and remove its ink cartridges and any other extraneous parts.
Step 2: Using tinfoil, create a tray for some plants in the middle of the printer. Fill it with potting mix.
Step 3: Add more plants of varying height and style to any additional compartments your printer may have to create a lush "printer-scape".

What is it about springtime that signals the start of DIY season? Yes, there are many who undertake projects all year long, but for some reason there seems to be a flurry of home improvement activity as the temperature begins to rise. Tote - Ok, so this isn't exactly for your home, but the hack from Melissa Esplin was so creative we had to share it. I guess what we're trying to say is, we totally love this tote. Armed with a $50 budget and an array of Rust-Oleum products, 14 of Vancouver’s top media personalities and local tastemakers each revamped a piece from ReStore into a seriously stylish seat to be put up for auction at the show, happening October 22-25 at the Vancouver Convention Centre West. 100% of proceeds raised directly benefit Habitat for Humanity Society of Greater Vancouver and its affiliated ReStores, so swing by the show for your chance to bid on good design for a great cause!

North Florida Upcyclers won't want to miss the Jacksonville Home + Patio Show at the Prime Osborn Convention Center, October 1-4, 2015. The home and garden event of the season features the Diva of DIY herself, Leanne Lee. Leanne will be sharing fun and fantastic upcycling ideas and DIY tips, so folks can learn how to better decorate their spaces and improve the environment.

Another thing you should do if you want to become a thrift store shopping expert is to keep an open mind. We all know there's about a hundred lamps that are in the back of the store. While the color of the light may not work for you, look at the shape and if the structure is there. If so, pick it up and bring it home! You can paint it or foil the base, and add a pretty shade that matches your home decor.
Coffee mugs and dishes are a dime a dozen. While they may be plain and boring, you can personalize the plates and mugs. These are great gift ideas that won't break the bank.
We have all seen the ugly, outdated 70s furniture that's sitting on the floor. It may be dirty and dingy, but look past that. Is the structure of the ottoman in good shape? If that coffee table sturdy? How about the chairs, are their overall frames in great condition? If so, go ahead and bring these items home! You can recover the ottoman with fabric to match your decor, sand and stain the coffee table, and create new to you chairs with paint, sanding, and stain or recover the seat."

"Upcycling" is very quickly becoming the most talked about trend in the renovation and design world. Upcycling is repurposing a tired or discarded item that you would otherwise throw out, into something beautiful and functional. You can upcycling almost anything, big or small, old or broken, whatever you can think of!
For this year's Ottawa Fall Home Show, we've teamed up with Habitat for Humanity to bring you the Ultimate Upcycle Challenge! Local celebrities, design experts, media personalities, and DIY bloggers will be put to the test.
Armed with a small budget, some paint from Rust-Oleum, and all the creativity they can muster, the participants will be sourcing and repurposing a previously-owned item. Entries will be displayed at the show where visitors will have the chance to bid on the items with all the proceeds being donated to Habitat for Humanity.
So how can you become a part of the upcycle trend? With almost anything! We've put together some ideas to help you get started.
Calling All Old Denim
We all have that pair of jeans that are a torn, worn mess, but no matter what, we can't seem to get rid of them. Now you don't have to! You can repurpose denim into almost anything; decorations, pillow cases, totes, and even blankets!
Too Many Pillowcases?
Find yourself with too many empty pillowcases hanging around the linen closet? Pillowcases make great DIY materials because they are made up of so many patterns, textures, and sizes! This leaves you with a realm of possibilities to try! Why not sew them together and stuff it to make a sleeping mat? Or use them to make garment bags and painting smocks for kids? Try adding a pocket and handle to a case for the perfect kid's traveling pillow!

Mason jars are perhaps the most universal DIY item there is. Don't throw them away once they're empty, put them to good use! Bringing a rustic feel to any project, mason jars are super easy to repurpose into almost anything. We love them as storage, candles, and vases.

welcomes back the Ultimate Upcycle Challenge: Take A Seat. This creative project promotes
sustainable design while raising awareness and much-needed funds for Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta and its affiliated ReStores. Ten local tastemakers were tasked with sourcing and
upcycling one furniture item from ReStore Calgary into a seat, with each piece
to be exhibited and auctioned
at the upcoming show, September
17-20, 2015 at the BMO Centre.

Each participant chose their item(s) directly from ReStore Calgary, then completed the makeover using only a randomly assigned mystery box of Rust-Oleum Consumer Brand Canada products and a $50 design budget.

Earth Day is this Wednesday - how will you be celebrating? For many, this holiday serves as a call to be more conscious of how their choices and lifestyle affect the environment. With this concept in mind, we came up with simple changes homeowners can make to their daily routine to lessen their impact on the planet. Here are some things you can try that are more earth-friendly than the alternative.
Not: Turning up your thermostat. Your furnace uses a lot of energy; why not get toasty under a chic and cozy blanket instead of upping the heat and your heating bill?
Not: Switching on more lights. Candles are a great source of light and can add a sense of warmth to any space. Light 'em up instead of your lights.
Not: Cellophane or aluminum foil. Reusable containers, like Tupperware, Rubbermaid, and mason jars, are great for storing leftovers, but you should also try using them to store other foods and produce that you'd normally wrap in plastic or aluminum. Create less waste while still keeping things fresh.
Not: Buying imported produce in grocery stores. A vegetable garden is not only a fun hobby, it yields delicious crops. Planes, trains, and trucks are all used to bring produces to your grocery store (especially if it's out of season). Think about all the fuel that takes. Help reduce emissions by eating locally when you can.
Not: Getting all your furniture brand new. Often times a little paint and elbow grease is all you need to give a piece of furniture a new lease on life. This is the ultimate form of recycling and it's a great way to get custom decor for your home.

Try This: Blankets

Not: Turning up your thermostat. Your furnace uses a lot of energy; why not get toasty under a chic and cozy blanket instead of upping the heat and your heating bill?
Try This: Candles

Not: Switching on more lights. Candles are a great source of light and can add a sense of warmth to any space. Light 'em up instead of your lights.
Try This: Reusable Containers

Not: Cellophane or aluminum foil. Reusable containers, like Tupperware, Rubbermaid, and mason jars, are great for storing leftovers, but you should also try using them to store other foods and produce that you'd normally wrap in plastic or aluminum. Create less waste while still keeping things fresh.
Try This: Gardening

Not: Buying imported produce in grocery stores. A vegetable garden is not only a fun hobby, it yields delicious crops. Planes, trains, and trucks are all used to bring produces to your grocery store (especially if it's out of season). Think about all the fuel that takes. Help reduce emissions by eating locally when you can.
Try This: Upcycling
Not: Getting all your furniture brand new. Often times a little paint and elbow grease is all you need to give a piece of furniture a new lease on life. This is the ultimate form of recycling and it's a great way to get custom decor for your home.

Leanne Lee is best known as the Diva of DIY, and was recently named the Home + Garden Trendsetter of the Year. This junk-lovin', dumpster-diver is also a wife and mother of three boys. Her amazing ability to take discarded items and give them a bright, new future made a splash in the blogging and media world. Leanne is an expert at reviving old spaces in the home by using a variety of DIY and repurposing techniques for budget-friendly masterpieces. As a busy mother, wife, and business owner, Leanne understands the stress of budgeting in the home. In her opinion, a well-designed home doesn't have to cost a fortune!

Step 1: Remove bulbs from chandelier
Step 2: Remove plastic wire cover from chandelier
Step 3: Put on safety goggles
Step 4: Cut wires with wire cutters
Step 5: Unscrew bulb holder
Step 6: Remove metal base
Step 7: Using E6000, glue steel or galvanized nut to threaded bolt
Step 8: Replace metal base
Step 9: Let dry overnight
Step 10: Spray paint in desired color, then let dry
Step 11: Glue custard cups to metal bases
Step 12: Let dry overnight

Step 1: Remove bulbs from chandelier

The Buffalo Home Show welcomes dynamic husband and wife duo, John and Whitney Spinks, from the popular HGTV program Flipping The Block, Saturday March 7th and Sunday, March 8th at 1pm and 4pm.
From easy, affordable DIY hacks to tips and tricks that will lavishly transform any interior on a tight budget, John and Whitney's insights are sure to give anyone a leg up in their next big renovation project. They will also share behind-the-scenes secrets from the show, including before-and-after pictures and how they won so many room challenges on a tight $37,000 budget.
The young couple from Jacksonville, Florida became instant stars on Flipping The Block, taking on three other teams in a home makeover challenge. John's background in building construction management and Whitney's passion for interior design go hand-in-hand. Together, their creative renovation techniques transformed fixer-upper condos into beautifully upgraded properties that landed the biggest resale value in the end.
We asked the Spinks a few questions to help us gear up for their presentations this weekend.
Q: What has been your favorite remodeling project thus far?
John & Whitney: "Our favorite would have to be the full renovation we completed on a 960 sq. ft. condo on HGTV's Flipping The Block. The place was a total dump to begin with, and the Before & After photos show that anything can be beautiful after some much needed love."
Q: What is your go-to tool for 2015?
John & Whitney: "Does a tool box count?! We just purchased a rolling tool box, which is so convenient to wheel everything that e need right out of the truck! The tools that we use all the time (drills, drives, hammers, etc.) are always handy."
Q: What is one simple pro tip that you would give to start-up DIY-ers out there?
John & Whitney: "Start small! It takes time to develop your skills, so don't give up when projects fail. Because they will! Just keep going and you'll get familiar with what works and what doesn't. We started with paint - painting furniture, then building furniture, then trying out hand at tiling, etc."
Q: What one piece of advice or tip would you give to people who plan to attend the Buffalo Home Show?
John & Whitney: "Not only is the home show a great place to get inspiration, but also don't be afraid to ask questions about the products you are interested in. If you are preparing for a kitchen remodel, ask the kitchen vendors about the different cabinets they carry."
