That’s a wrap on the 2015 Vancouver Home + Design Show! With the big move back to the Vancouver Convention Center West, headliners including W Network’s Jillian Harris & Todd Talbot, Cheryl Torrenueva from W Network’s Game of Homes, and HGTV design star Samantha Pynn, plus a slew of local favourites and over 325 exhibitors, there was expert insight, innovation and inspiration for stylish living at every turn.

Couldn’t make the show? Take a tour of our favourite moments below, complete with covetable design, fierce competition and the best advice in the biz.

Everyone’s favourite design and real estate duo Jillian Harris and Todd Talbot from W Network’s Love It or List It Vancouver cracked plenty of jokes while dispensing expert insight on where to splurge and where to save when creating your dream home.

The Ultimate Upcycle Challenge: Take a Seat proved design with a conscience never goes out of style, raising a grand total of $750 in support of Habitat for Humanity Society of Greater Vancouver ReStores.

The Samsung Junior Chef Challenge paired top Vancouver chefs Craig Scherer from Trattoria Burnaby and Geoff Rogers from Blacktail Restaurant + Lounge with home chefs Maddie Lemieux and Matthew Tong. Craig and Matthew took home gold, with Matthew winning $5,000 worth of home kitchen appliances.

Design darling and star judge Cheryl Torrenueva from W Network’s Game of Homes Vancouver made her much anticipated return to the Vancouver Home + Design Show Main Stage where she walked guests through the pros and cons of DIY projects VS. delegating to professionals.

Mark your calendars for the 2016 BC Home + Garden Show, coming up from February 17th to 21st at BC Place Stadium! Visit bchomeandgardenshow.com for more details.

Selling a home in a saturated market can be a daunting prospect, especially if the space’s style is stuck in the dark ages. Samantha Pynn, designer and host of HGTV’s Open House Overhaul and headliner at the 2015 Vancouver Home + Design Show (happening October 22-25 at the Vancouver Convention Centre West), has seen it all, from pea green bathrooms to dated upholstery and beyond.

Catch her inside tips on readying your house for a quick and satisfying sale on the Vancouver Home + Design Show Main Stage on Saturday, October 24 at 3PM. In the meantime, here’s a preview of her best advice on how to move that house.

Make space. Before you start to add the pretty stuff, edit and pack away all the clutter. Rooms that are jammed with extra furniture read as small.

Fresh paint. Paint away dark or personal colour combos like red and green, or  mustard yellow and purple. A fresh coat of soft white or pale grey will make your space feel cleaner and brighter and allow potential buyers to envision their own furniture in your house.

Repair and replace. Cabinet doors hanging off their hinges, rusty faucets, and cracked toilet seats bring down the value of your home. It's amazing what how much a fresh stain finish on the cabinets and new hardware or fixtures can make a room feel brand new.

Looking for fresh decor to take your space to the next level? Try incorporating a bold statement piece into the room you’re revamping. Unique items can really enhance your design. Focal points can add an unexpected cohesiveness to a space, and they make for great conversation starters!

You don’t have to travel the world in order to find statement pieces for your home. Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault, the Queen of DIY and one of our favourite home improvement experts, explains that most retailers now offer more unique pieces to suit the growing eclectic appreciation trend.

Begin your search for an original accent piece by scouting out local home decor and furniture outlets. See if anything catches your eye and be open to bright colours you might otherwise avoid – you really want this item to POP!

If you can’t find anything you really love, (and you want to make sure you really love this piece; never settle when it comes to choosing decor), try hitting up thrift stores, flea markets, and even garage or yard sales. You’re more likely to discover an original item in these venues, although what you find may not always be in the best condition. Don’t let a little wear and tear scare you off - some paint and a bit of elbow grease can usually solve most problems!

For more design, decor, and DIY advice make sure to catch Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault at the Vancouver Home + Design Show, October 22-25, 2015 at its new location, the Vancouver Convention Centre - West. Leigh-Ann will be gracing the Main Stage on Saturday, October 24th at 6pm and Sunday, October 25th at 12pm.

Staying ahead of the design trend curve is no easy task, with countless looks dipping in and out of the popularity pool and a seemingly overwhelming array of options. Luckily we have Vancouver Home + Design Show headliner Cheryl Torrenueva from W Network’s Game of Homes to set our style straight this season. Herewith, Cheryl’s top tips for staying on-trend in 2016.

Handmade Futuristic

Celebrate one-of-a-kind prints and streamlined shapes combined with the latest in high tech finishes. These mix-and-match cushions in a variety of patterns from geometric to handcrafted embroidery are just the thing to put your space on the cutting edge of design.

Classic Luxury

Exotic & Ethnic

Focus on well-traveled elements like filigree metal lanterns, natural inspired hues and ethnic prints to add a dash of character and drama to a space, a la this fresh and fun patio setup.

Check out our website to see a recent Burnaby home with a cistern."

What is your biggest home design pet peeve?

"Our pet peeve is when a home feels like it's working against you. A home should be thoughtfully designed, a natural extension of your family, and feel good."

What's the strangest client request you've ever received?

"We designed and built a carport that was engineered specifically to accommodate the weight of fruit trees growing into and through the structure. The roof overhangs were 3D modeled according to their yard's solar path. The idea being that together with its green roof and water collection system in the rear, the entire structure becomes a living unit, intended to enhance their backyard and maximize fruit yield."

What's your favourite part of the Vancouver Home + Design Show?

"We love the buildup and excitement of things to come! It's great to see all the people we talk to on the phone every day, and of course make new connections. A glass of wine at the end of it with a job well done."

Is there anything else you think folks should know about your company?

Truly design build, we integrate our services, working proactively through to the end. We are licensed builders with HPO, Renomark Renovators, and proud GVHBA and BBB members."

The Vancouver Home + Design Show opens today! Now until Sunday at BC Place Stadium you can take in seemingly endless celebrity presentations, expert ideas, and more! We couldn't be more excited to share our fabulous features, renovation tips and tricks, design ideas, and culinary creations with you all weekend long.

With so much going on, you may need to pace yourself. Read our show survival tips below to hit the Vancouver Home + Design Show like a pro.

1. Come Prepared
Wear comfortable footwear - BC Place Stadium is a huge building, and you don't want to get tripped up by sore soles. Plus, grab a free bag (or two) from our generous exhibitors and you'll have the perfect spot to throw oodles of samples, coupons, and more.

2. Slow Down
Don't rush through the show or you'll miss the best bits. Arrive early, stay late, and take your time. There's plenty to see and do to keep you entertained all day long. When you need to rest your feet, head to the Floform Lounge and enjoy a change of scenery with a copy of Western Living Magazine and a glass of Church + State vino. You'll also find snacks at the ready - or if you crave something a little more filling, check out the food court options like Steveston Fish & Chips and Vij's.

3. Stick to Your Schedule
Have a favourite celebrity guest that you just have to see? Create a schedule so you never miss a minute. Better yet, set alarms for yourself so you know where you have to be and when. Don't forget to keep your show map with you - no one likes getting lost!

4. Be Ready to Buy
Nothing's worse than falling madly in love with the perfect product at the show and not having the cash on hand to make it yours. Many of our exhibitors take credit, but just in case, have some cash at the ready.

5. Take Notes
You're only human, you can't be expected to remember everything you hear at the show. Whether you're listening to Bryan Baeumler, cooking with Chef Corbin, or getting the low-down at the Ask a Designer booth, be ready with pen and paper (or smartphone, on silent) in hand!

6. Stay Up to Date
BC Place has free wifi and we'll be live tweeting all weekend long. Make sure to follow us at @VanHomeShows to get the latest information on giveaways, presenters, and the best booths. Have something to say? Share it with us using #VHDS14! You never know, you could win a prize (hint, hint).

Now that you have these tips, put them to good use at the show! Haven't bought your tickets yet? No worries. Right now you can get two tickets for the price of one when you like us on Facebook. Bring a friend or family member to the show; we can't wait to see you there!

Oct 6, 2014

We are thrilled to have Metrie joining us for the Vancouver Home + Design Show, October 12-19, 2014 at BC Place. Here's an inside scoop on what's happening at Metrie and what to expect from them at the show.

1. What are your featured products this season?

We are featuring our Then & Now Finishing Collections - the first line of professionally designed and perfectly coordinated interior finishings in North America. Inspired by different home decor styles, the Collections consist of moulding, trim, and interior doors, sized and proportioned to fit together with precision.

These Collections take the guesswork out of the moulding and trim selection process, and provide a solution that helps homeowners, builders, and interior designers achieve a professional, custom look without the expense of obtaining custom millwork. Simply find a Metrie Collection that matches your style, choose the desired trim elements, and select your interior doors.

2. What can we look forward to from you at the show?

You'll have the chance to see how using the right moulding and interior door combinations can really have an impact on a space. We are the sponsor for the Main Stage at the show and took the opportunity to "set the stage" with our Very Square Finishing Collection, featuring our Scene II casing, crown, chair rail, architrave, baseboard, and our new 4-Panel interior door. So be sure to stop by and check out the activity and decor at the Metrie Main Stage!

3. What home design and decor trends are you anticipating for 2015?

Designers and homeowners are looking for a more harmonized look that flows from room to room, and are using coordinated interior doors and trim to achieve that. They also aren't leaving trim choices up to the builder or contractor anymore. Finding more economical ways to create the tone for your vision is always in style, which is another reason why coordinated trim and interior doors are more popular. So selecting the right trimwork and then staining and painting it according to trendy colours, like the ombre graduated colour-scheme or the rose-gold that's hot now will continue into next year.

4. What inspires your products?

In a word? Trends. Our professional designers spend time searching for trends in home decor and even fashion to translate the most beautiful details of those trends into our products. They also incorporate these elements in a way that will keep these mouldings and interior doors looking modern. Unlike the moulding you see on the shelf at a retail store today, (or in most homes), the Metrie Then & Now Finishing Collections were designed to accentuate your decor whether you decide you want a look that's modern, traditional, country, or shabby chic.

5. What is your favourite part of the show?

Since the Vancouver Home + Design Show is like Christmas for design enthusiasts, we love visiting each exhibitor. This year, we are also excited to watch Canada's most talented design and home improvement experts share advice and help solve anything from small design questions for full-on disasters on the Metrie Main Stage.

6. What advice would you give homeowners?

We recommend interior finishings (like moulding and trimwork) be incorporated early into design plans as a way to save money and improve flow in spaces. These architectural elements have so much power in establishing the tone and feel you want in a room, so you don't have to rely on expensive furniture, art, new flooring, or renovations for the same impact. With different applications and paints, trimwork in the home can be updated to reflect changing tastes and trends, really giving rooms a professionally designed, finished feel. Many of the most famous rooms in the world owe their character and charm to the moulding and trim.

7. What is your creative process like?

Our team of designers look at architectural styles and home decor design trends throughout North America and the world before experimenting and looking for ways to apply these elements into offerings that are both timeless and modern. Our wood experts also collaborate by lending their expertise on the beauty and possibilities of designing in natural wood for our Scene III lines, and how best to highlight the natural beauty of different wood grains and species in your home.

Don't miss out on Metrie's fine features and the excitement of the Metrie Main Stage. Grab your tickets to the Vancouver Home + Design Show today.
