Every homeowner likes to think
that they are the DIY master of the renovation world, but sometimes
– whether they want to admit it or not – homeowners are not as good with power
tools as they think they are. It is important to know when to step back and ask
for help, which is why Edmonton Renovation Show presenter Jamie Banfield of
Jamie Banfield Design has given us the do’s and don’ts of bringing in an
expert. Hint: spending a little extra on a designer might actually save your
budget!
If you have a full vision for your renovation, if you understand products and know where you need to go, Jamie suggests bringing in a designer because they can get you discounts that you would likely never snag as a consumer.
"Designers typically will take 7-10% of what typical renovation budgets should be, but those designers can fight for discounts, know when to buy thing/when there are sales going on, and know what areas to put cash into."
Jamie also says that good designers will have contacts for trades, whether it's a dry-waller or cabinet installer. Even if you're a self-proclaimed handyperson, hiring a designer could potentially nab you some great deals on products and installation.
"If you cheap out on the install you could spend $20,000 on cabinets, save $2,000 by doing the installation yourself, and the whole thing will look terrible. Or you could buy a $5,000 kitchen and spend $1,500 on the installation, and just by having it installed correctly, it'll look like a million bucks."
For The DIY Master
If you have a full vision for your renovation, if you understand products and know where you need to go, Jamie suggests bringing in a designer because they can get you discounts that you would likely never snag as a consumer.

For The Not-So-Renovation-Savvy
If you're a renovation newbie, Jamie highly recommends bringing in a designer because they'll know what steps to take and what steps not to take in terms of how to make the most of your new space.
"Professionals can help homeowners make better choices. Designers understand the details going together. They'll know that the countertops are going to be installed on Tuesday, and the plumber is coming on Wednesday. Whereas a lot of consumers won't have that plan of attack."
Designers think of the right planning and logistical aspects of a renovation project, which is definitely something that many consumers don't really consider. If you're just getting started in the renovation world, professional help is key to saving time and money.
Overall, Jamie says the most efficient way to save your renovation budget is to put the most attention on installation. Let's say you're redoing your kitchen and you've decided the best way to save money is to install the cabinets by yourself. This could actually lead to costly mistakes and sloppy handywork.
Calling in experts can save you money, and Jamie has a million tricks up his sleeve to help you create an elegant space on a tight budget. Check out his presentations at the Edmonton Renovation Show, January 23 - 25, to find all the tips you'll need to get started on your project!

him and his company, Jamie Banfield Designs.
Tell us about yourself
Jamie.
I became an interior designer after studying at the British
Columbia Institute of Technology in Vancouver, BC. I currently serve as an
officer and allied member of the National Kitchen and Bath Association. As the
vice president of programs for the British Columbia chapter of the National
Kitchen and Bath Association, I have a hands-on commitment to bringing
education, knowledge and partners to BC’s kitchen and bath industry.
Early on, I established my career at a respectable cabinetry
manufacturer where I gained knowledge and learned skills specific to the mill-work industry. It was
here that I discovered my passion for green design, which is the philosophy of
creating a beautiful space while still complying with the principles of social,
economic and ecological sustainability. Today, I bring both my experience and
innovation as an interior designer to each and every one of my projects.
Tell
us about what inspires Jamie Banfield Designs’ services.
We derive
inspiration from the people in need of our services. It is our job to pull a
design out of the client, not to tell a client what design they need! We are
inspired by our surroundings and we find ideas in everything from fashion to architecture.
We discuss all our design inspirations in-house and on our blog www.everythingindesign.com.
Describe your business in just 3 words.
Inspire,
design, build.
How
many years have you been involved with the Vancouver Home + Design Show and
what do you love about participating?
This is the first year that Jamie Banfield
Designs will be participating in the Vancouver Home + Design Show, but we are
no strangers to the show! We can’t wait to take part this year, check out the
top decorating talent this city has to offer and meet all the visitors. We look
forward to answering design-related questions and solving style dilemmas.

EXHIBITOR SPOTLIGHT

You won't want to miss jB Interior Design at our
2013 Vancouver Home + Design Show (Oct. 17-20)!
Get to know this fabulous exhibitor!
- Company Website
- White Rock BC
- Jamie and his team work on projects of all sizes, from complete design services for multi-million dollar homes to selecting the perfect paint colour for a client’s master bath. Whether residential design or selected commercial projects Jamie always manages to delight his customers with his fresh enduring designs, creative solutions, and his desire for sustainable sourcing. Jamie challenges his team to source the perfect solutions in all aspects of the design, specification, execution and management of each project. His team not only listens to the client but also understands the effects of each design, the importance of the attention to detail and the construction choice for a client’s space.
- Colour, Shapes, Pattern, Texture! Blow up the scale!
- We are here to problem-solve, inspire, envision, and educate our clients to create a space that enhances ones quality of life and doing so might take longer than a HGTV design episode!
- We start out our design relationship with each client with a "meet and inspire" where we chat about the space, the client needs, wants, expectations and outcomes for the end users. As a total project design and management team we see the project from inspiration to final completion.
- What is the most important part of your process?
- When working on any project a plan is the most import part of the process. By having a plan and doing our homework we help clients everyday save time, funds and skip those headaches! My team and I implement budget schematics, timelines and desired completion dates in the early phases of concept, by doing so we create a well formed foundation of the projects working grounds.
- We work with our clients and other members to form a detailed design-build package; this package encompasses every product, fixture, fitting, finishing material, detail, schedule, budget and task needed to bring the dreamed space to life! This package ensures all parties involved are all on the same page. Once we have completed the design-build package we implement the scheduling of tasks, and ordering of all noted construction, finishing, fixture and fitting products. My team and I will personally oversee all aspects of the installation process, and educate the client through the process.
- Tell us about your team’s cooperation and integrity:
- As design professionals my team understands the "dos" and "donts" of a project and are very honest to all involved from clients, trades and our industry network. My team works with integrity and ethics, and I hold all parties involved to a high level of ethic and integrity of all sectors of business! We hold our industry network to a high standard of quality, and we will personally oversee the project until the last item is in place in one's new and spectacular space!
- Our main purpose as a total project design and management team is health and safety of all involved, to design, create and implement a well functional, usable space that is not only physically, socially and aesthetically functional for all end users but fits with the client’s personality and needs. We adhere to code and regulatory requirements while encouraging environmental sustainability and green solutions. We are here to problem-solve, inspire, envision, and educate our clients to create a space that enhances ones quality of life and doing so might take longer than a HGTV design episode!
You can catch jB Interior Design at our
