What is it about springtime that signals the start of DIY season? Yes, there are many who undertake projects all year long, but for some reason there seems to be a flurry of home improvement activity as the temperature begins to rise. Perhaps it's the bright spring sunshine illuminating your dated decor, or the prevalence of inspiring spring colors, patterns, and trends, or maybe we're all just feeling invigorated after a long winter's rest. Regardless of your motivations, we're excited to share some new projects to help cultivate your DIY ambitions. We know that starting a DIY entirely from scratch can be a lot of work and usually requires a certain level of skill that not every homeowner possesses. So we decided to share our 10 favorite IKEA hacks - simple projects you can try to make your otherwise conventional IKEA furniture look more beautiful and luxurious. Bathroom Vanity - The Golden Sycamore went a little rustic with their hack and we approve. A touch of milk paint changes the feel of this IKEA vanity, making it look a lot more luxurious, expensive, and unique. Get the full tutorial here.

Tote - Ok, so this isn't exactly for your home, but the hack from Melissa Esplin was so creative we had to share it. I guess what we're trying to say is, we totally love this tote. Can you believe the Johnson County Home + Garden Show starts this Friday? One of Kansas City's premier home and garden events takes over the Overland Park Convention Center February 20 - 22, 2015. Featuring national celebrities, local experts, and hundreds of exhibitors ready to help you with your next home improvement project, there's a lot happening at the show. To help you prepare for your visit this weekend we've compiled a list of the top 5 things to see and do at the show. 1. John Gidding - The internationally renowned architect and host of HGTV's Designed to Sell and Curb Appeal: The Block has it all: beauty and brains. All proceeds will benefit Sunflower House.

What is the First :59? Our Philadelphia Home Show partner, IKEA, believes that the first 59

things that we endure. It’s a hurried and chaotic time for
many families - especially as people get ready to send their
kids back to school after the holidays and get back to their usual routines.

Here are some tips, courtesy of IKEA, on how to take that first :59 and make it a positive start to the rest of your day!
- Share your morning routine with your partner. Depending on who is out of bed first, have one person start the morning routine...whether it be getting the kids out of bed, taking the dog out, or brewing your morning coffee. Create a partnership. One person starts the task, the other completes it.
- If you have troubles waking up in the morning, put a floor lamp on a timer. Have the floor lamp turn on before your alarm for a smoother transition from that deep sleep.
- Shower your kids the night before...While you're at it, shower yourself the night before. When you wake up, all you will need is a little refresher instead of having to go through the entire routine.
- Practice a "no electronics" rule in the morning. No check emails, playing video games, or social media. It allows you to focus on the task at hand, and also makes for a less stressful morning.

Recently featured at our Calgary Home + Design Show, this retro rewind "Newlywed" living room showcases function and style in a very creative way. Designed by Cassie Reid, Emily Hoff, and Samantha McKay, this space incorporates the classic IKEA white sofa with an added fabric face lift.
In addition to this easy makeover, the use of black and white in this space balances the stunning bold blue perfectly. What ties it all together? For us it's the combination of the gold accents and the awesome area rug!

Four teams of 2nd
year students, assisted by their Bow Valley College professors, will unveil their colourful take on a once-white room using five classic IKEA furnishings plus $1,000-worth of home decor and accessories.
Visitors to the Calgary Home + Design Show will have the opportunity to browse the four rooms and vote for their favourite look, with five lucky winners each walking away with one of the four final designs or white room of their very own courtesy of IKEA.

A transparent sphere slowly takes shape in
the middle of the forest, light sparkling off the clear plastic dome. It sounds
like a scene from a sci-fi movie but these otherworldly, inflatable structures

I always get excited when the new IKEA catalogue is released. I like to have a good long browse of the catalogue with a nice cup of tea at hand.
This year the IKEA catalogue is even better; in addition to the print version there is also an app to make your browsing more interactive!

The new 2013 catalogue isn’t limited to the ideas in print. It comes to life on your phone by scanning anywhere there is an interactive symbol on the page. A quick scan reveals videos, 3D graphics, x-ray views and décor changes. I love that it allows you to see inside a piece of furniture (x-ray views) making it even easier to imagine how a piece will function.
You can also find a store, a product, make a shopping list and see special offers. Plus download international publications to see if the product selection is different in other stores. Handy for any international jet-setting designer!
