the Ultimate Upcycle Challenge: Unhinged, a fundraising event for Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta
happening at the Calgary Home + Design Show this weekend.
For Calgary’s first Ultimate Upcycle
Challenge: Unhinged, six creative locals are repurposing doors from ReStore Calgary to be sold in a silent auction at the Calgary Home + Design Show. Just in case you’re unfamiliar with upcycling, it’s the
latest design trend that has DIY enthusiasts transforming seemingly unusable products
into modern furniture and home décor pieces.
The finished works to be unveiled at the
show this weekend were created by Mike Lam, Brooklyn Berry, Amy Wakefield, Jaelyn Molyneux, Kathy Hale and team Kait Kucy and Mackenzie Clarke.
Mike Lam is owner and
designer at Mike Lam Design Inc., an
eco-friendly boutique furniture company founded in 2012. Born in Hong Kong and
raised in Edmonton, Mike’s dual heritage and ability to marry aesthetic values
of east and west is expressed through his beautiful, emotionally accessible
designs.
BrooklynBerry, interior designer and mom to
three boys, catalogues her ideas and artistic inspiration on her blog Brookyln Berry Designs. Brooke
believes that personality trumps trends, and revels in creating spaces that
reflects who you are and what you love.
Amy Wakefield is a photographer who captures her travels far and near on film.
With a penchant for antiquities and history-laden pieces and places, Amy
creates original photographic images that are hand made into functional artwork
and home décor.
Jaelyn Molyneux is the web editor of AvenueCalgary.com,
the digital extension of city lifestyle magazine Avenue Calgary. When she’s not adding to the conversation on social
media or writing and editing stories about the latest food, style and city news
in Calgary, she likes to get crafty.
Kathy Hale is an
artist and the current president of the Calgary Artists’ Society. Finding
constant inspiration in abstract patterns of light and colour from a broad
range of subjects, Kathy believes that art is good for the soul and is happiest
with a paintbrush in hand.

Blogging duo Kait Kucy and Mackenzie Clarke of The Standard Issue are combining their
talents for the Ultimate Upcycle Challenge: Unhinged. Kait, a writer, and
Mackenzie, an interior and graphic designer, cover the best shops, spots and
emerging talent that Canada has to offer.
We can’t wait to see how the upcyclers transformed
their doors from ReStore Calgary, one of
80 donation centres across Canada that raise funds for Habitat for Humanity by
selling gently used furniture, appliances, home décor, appliances and building
materials.

Without proper accouterments and decorative
accessories, a house could hardly be called a home. Imagine empty kitchen
cutlery draws and naked sofas with no pillows or throws; it’s the little things
that make a home both functional and stylish.
From kitchen appliances to home décor, the
culinary and design experts appearing at the Calgary Home + Design Show know how to furnish a home on a shoestring budget. With help from our
experts, we compiled a list of must-have items for under $100.
Kitchen:
The cooking and baking aficionados appearing
at the Calgary Home + Design Show know how to make the kitchen the true heart of the home without
spending a lot of cash.
When faced with a $100 budget, food and
travel writer Dan Clapson
suggests that homeowners purchase the basic cooking utensils, like a paring
knife, cutting board, mortar and pestle and immersion blender.
Ask Dan what recipes he likes to whip up
with these kitchen necessities at the Calgary Home + Design Show. He will appear on the Trail Appliances Cooking Stage at 5PM on
Saturday Sept. 21.
If Xavier Lacaze, chef and partner at Briggs Kitchen + Bar, needed to purchase kitchen supplies on a tight budget, he
would spend it all on one key item. Xavier would blow the entire $100 on a
blender or a food processor. Some of his favourite tasty treats rely completely
on these appliances.
Living Room:
Create an inviting living room without
spending a dime. Drew Scott, co-host
of W Network’s Property Brothers, suggests homeowners simply rearrange their existing
furniture to make a room feel like a brand new space. But, for those little
accessories that go a long way, he suggests looking for a beautiful art piece
to hang on the wall or stand on a table. Drew has even found artsy steals for
less than $20.

We
chatted with Louis Stack, Fitterfirst founder and proud third
generation Calgarian, to get the lowdown on this revolutionary new concept.
Tell us when your company was established and
how it got started.
The company was established in 1985. I underwent double foot and knee surgery,
which caused me to suffer a serious balance issue. Balance training would have helped
improve my condition. But, unfortunately the training device was not available
in North America. This inspired me to improve the design and concept of the
device available in Europe and bring it to North America. This eventually led
to the creation of Fitterfirst, where we focus on the development and manufacturing of simple yet
highly functional balance and stability products. The products are designed to
help reduce injuries, enhance sport performance and increase user’s confidence
in sports and daily living.
What inspires you when creating equipment for
Fitterfirst?
I focus
on products that are functional in that they integrate stability, agility and
mobility in the human body, with the goal of improving health and overall
wellbeing.
How many years have you involved with the
Calgary Home + Design Show and what is your favourite part?
This is the second year we will be exhibiting at the show. My favourite part is interacting with customers and helping them live a better, more comfortable day-to-day life.
What is your life philosophy?
I
believe that quality of life does not come from what you have, it comes from
what you do with what you have.

year students, assisted by their Bow Valley College professors, will unveil their colourful take on a once-white room using five classic IKEA furnishings plus $1,000-worth of home decor and accessories.

WOW
1 DAY! Painting was born in 2010 when entrepreneur Brian Scudamore was looking
for quality painters to complete a job at his home. Brain loves unique,
service-based companies, like his own successful business 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, and
he was searching for a painting company with a similar feel. He discovered a
company called One Day Painting and, intrigued by the concept of the single-day
promise, gave them a ring. When the painters from One Day Painting came, Brian
left for work in the morning and came home to a beautifully transformed home.
The experience was so easy, efficient and affordable, Brian made an offer to
buy the company and with that, WOW 1 DAY! Painting was born.
What inspires you?
WOWing
our customers is what inspires us! We chose the name WOW 1 DAY! Painting
because that’s what people say when they arrive home at the end of the day to
their freshly painted space. Satisfying customers is our motivation and our
goal is to make the ordinary experience of painting exceptional. From spotless

about your company?
When
people first hear about our one-day painting concept, they think that we must
rush to get it done and therefore cut corners. That’s simply not the case; it’s
just a question of manpower. If one painter can paint 10 rooms in 10 days, why
not have 10 painters paint the same 10 rooms in one day?

down with Wilko Van de Kamp at his Creative Windmill Photography studio
to learn what makes him tick, or, we should say, click.
Tell us about your company and how it got started.
My
company officially launched about 5 years ago, but I've had a passion for
photography since I bought my first camera at 15 years old. Being a self taught professional photographer, I have become my camera, its
lens my eye and its film my memory. I've been capturing this wonderful planet
and its beautiful inhabitants for more than half my life now.
Where do you find inspiration?
My artistic inspiration comes from traveling all
over the world and being privilege to so many magical moments that I couldn’t
help but capture. I fell
in love with the remarkable things I saw and the exceptional people who crossed
my path. My photographic art is my way of translating and
sharing these memories with the world.
How would you describe what you do?
I would
describe it as travel photography that makes your walls smile! Each one of my photographs is a unique piece you can’t find anywhere
else. My pictures are untouched and unedited – what you get is a true image of
real-life, with all the natural beauty, honesty and poignancy of a moment
captured in time. My pictures are available in a variety of mediums, including
art gallery prints, canvas prints, acrylic prints and bamboo prints.
How many years have you taken part in the
Calgary Home + Design Show and what is your favourite part about it?
This is
my first year that I have been involved with the show and I am excited to
participate. I’ve been hard at work designing unique displays and I can’t wait
to share them with all the visitors!

That wood picture frame on the mantle,
those floral teacups in the china cabinet, that knitted blanket on the sofa, these
are just some of the unique items that make your house a home. Sentimental
accessories add character and cast a cozy, inviting feel over a room. Not all
of our home accessories have a history, but without them our houses would not
be the same.
Home styling doesn't always come naturally,
so we went to Nicole Sjostedt, an
expert fashion and lifestyle stylist, for her go-to accessorizing tips. See
Nicole’s work up close and personal at the upcoming Calgary and Vancouver Home + Design Show, where
she’ll be showing off her signature style with the Western
Living Lounge.
Choosing accessories and deciding where or
how to place them can be tricky. To style your home like a pro, try playing
with Nicole’s four cardinal rules of accessorizing:
1.
Use Multiples
Hanging a trio of matching mirrors on the
living room wall or placing five similar candleholders together can create a burst
of visual interest. You don’t have to use items that look exactly the same, just
ones that look related. The pieces can be similar in colour, shape or texture.
2. Mix
& Match
Throw a couple of sparkly items with sleek
industrial pieces and voilà! Pairing contrasting items is just as intriguing
multiples. As with fashion, interior décor shouldn't be too matchy-matchy.
3. Strike a Balance
There are two basic types of balance to
take into consideration when debating how to display your accessories.
Symmetrical balance is the most traditional approach and is characterized by
having similar objects repeated in the same places on either side of a vertical
axis. When following the asymmetrical style, balance is achieved by considering
the visual weight of the objects. To do this, place dissimilar objects
strategically based on their visual weight.
4. Play
with Texture
Soft blankets and throws immediately add
warmth to a space, but cool textures can be just as interesting. Try a stone
bath mat or hang metal wall décor with sharp angles to play off an over-stuffed
occasional chair.
Now that you have got the basics down pat,
it’s time to start decorating!
