The beginning of spring means that folks are about to start tackling the projects they were inspired to try at their local Marketplace Events home show. To help keep your creative juices flowing and continue to share advice, we’ve rounded up the top tips our home and garden experts shared with us this year. Read on for ideas from your favorite industry stars, including Drew and Jonathan Scott of HGTV’s Property Brothers, Alison Victoria from DIY Network’s Kitchen Crashers, and Dr. Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell from the Cooking Channel’s The Fabulous Beekman Boys.

On Home Decor Trends

Food Network’s Restaurant Impossible star Taniya Nayak says, “Don’t worry about following trends; do what makes you happy!”

Alison Victoria of DIY Network’s Kitchen Crashers reminds folks that, “Timeless design is hard to figure out for most people, but when it comes to your kitchen…avoid the ‘fads’. Kitchens are the hub of the home. They are also the most expensive room in the house, so make sure to select timeless hardscapes (ie. Cabinets, countertops, appliances). Have fun with the backsplash or the cabinet hardware so you’re not breaking the bank when you change them out down the road.”

On Finding the Right Person for the Job

HGTV’s Two Chicks and a Hammer star Karen Rominger encourages homeowners to “Interview multiple contractors. Pick someone whose price is not at the top or bottom of the price range for services in your area.”

Her daughter Mina Starsiak values references. “Pick someone based on referrals. And don’t always go for the cheapest. Sometimes you get what you pay for.”

On Improving Curb Appeal

Matt Muenster, star of HGTV’s and DIY Network’s Bath Crashers, explains that upkeep doesn’t have to be expensive. “Keeping your home looking its best doesn’t have to be time-consuming or expensive. Sweep the dead leaves off the sidewalk. Mow the grass. Add potted plants on the porch. A tidy house is always appealing and can fit any budget.”

Matt at the 2016 OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show

Of course John Gidding, star of HGTV’s Curb Appeal: The Block, has something helpful to say about curb appeal. “Toss out those old, gold house number stickers! There are many newer styles of house numbers in black, nickel and stainless. Roll out the welcome mat! There’s no reason to hold onto that same muddy mat year after year. Welcome mats make a great style statement. They’re affordable and come in a variety of colors, shapes and motifs.”

On Choosing Your Next Project

Andy and Candis Meredith, stars of HGTV’s and DIY Network’s Old Home Love, feel you should “Do your research! If you do things right the first time, even if you’re starting small, it will save you a lot of time and money down the road. If you’re on a budget, spend the money on projects that could become safety issues, such as electrical. If you can’t afford a total renovation right away, try to make your home as comfortable as you can.”

Stars of the Cooking Channels The Fabulous Beekman Boys, Dr. Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell, have a great idea for getting creative with your space: “Take a photo of your home during every season, but actually look at it during a different season. For instance, study the winter home during the peak of summer. Having different perspective will help you think creatively.”

On Making the Most of Your Outdoor Space

Drew and Jonathan Scott, stars of the HGTV series Property Brothers, have a rugged tip for your backyard. “Outdoor area rugs can really make a space feel more comfortable and inviting. Also clustering plants in pots of different heights is easy and doesn’t involve any construction.”

Drew and Jonathan at the 2016 Minneapolis Home + Garden Show

HGTV’s Vacation House for Free and DIY Network’s Yard Crashers star Matt Blashaw has an idea for livening up your flower beds: “I’m a big fan of fresh mulch. I consider mulch the paint of the backyard. A fresh coat laid in the flower beds brings a fresh look to any yard.”

It’s finally here! The first-ever Philly Home + Garden Show opens its doors this Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks, and we couldn't be more excited! There is so much to do and see at the show, so we’ve put together an outline of 10 must-see features, events and exhibits to help you make the most of your visit to the show.

1. Celebrity Guests: Jonathan and Drew Scott - better known as Property Brothers - and Chip Wade, host of the new HGTV show Elbow Room, will be appearing live at the show. Show attendees will have the opportunity to learn from these experts during their presentations on the main stage, live Q&A sessions and a meet & greet.

2. Smart Home: Powered by XFINITY®, Built by Rudloff Custom Builders. Rudloff Custom Builders designed a full-scale model home inside of the exhibit hall that will feature the latest styles and design trends along with cutting-edge devices and environmentally friendly materials. Attendees are invited to walk through this one-of-a-kind house, powered by XFINITY®, to gather inspiration from the beautiful decor, designed by Deanna Lorenti of Deanna’s Interiors, and learn about how they can be more “green” while reducing their utility bills, and improving efficiency and functionality throughout the home.

3. Feature Gardens: As attendees enter the show, they will be greeted by six dream gardens that will provide inspiration and ideas for creating a dream backyard. Featured landscapers include Village Nursery & Gardens , Devine Escapes, Crystal Clear Signature Pools, Turpin Landscaping, WJA Landscaping and AJR Environmental. Guests who tour the feature gardens can learn more about the products and services used and discuss tips and recommendations for improving their outdoor living space.

4. Main Stage: The main stage will host a series of presentations from celebrity guests and home & garden experts. Presentation topics range from Preparing Your Home for a Snopocalypse and Strategies for Living a Clutter Free Life to Help and Hope for People who Hoard and “Greening” your home. View the full schedule here.

5. Crafted: An open market where guests can shop for hand-made, finely-crafted items, antiques and original art to add instant character and charm to their home.

6. Make-It, Take-It: An interactive DIY demo session where guests can test their DIY skills. With some guidance from an expert, homeowners will create a DIY project they can take home to display. Check out the schedule to find out when sessions are being hosted and what crafts you’ll be making! Click here for more about the Make-it, Take-it exhibit.

7. Mailbox Makeover: The center aisle of the show floor will be lined with mailboxes, creatively designed by local artists, designers and some of Philly’s VIPs, to provide inspiration to show-goers looking for a fun, colorful way to add character to their home’s curb appeal.

8. Front Door Challenge: Attendees have the chance to put their creativity to the test with this fun, interactive challenge. A plainly decorated front door will be on display, surrounded by lots of accessories. Participants have two minutes to create their best display, snap a pic and post it to Instagram. A panel of show designers will then choose a winner.

9. Alex’s Room: The host of Fox29’s Good Day Philadelphia, Alex Holley, is working with Ballard Designs and Denise Sabia of The Painted Home to create a lounge at the Philly Home + Garden Show. Using Denise’s design expertise and Alex’s personal style, they will select furniture and décor pieces from Ballard Designs’ new location in the King of Prussia Mall to create Alex’s dream room. Show-goers can use the lounge to sit and relax during their busy day at the show while gathering inspirations from the room’s beautiful design.

10. Exhibitors: The show will feature more than 150 exhibitors sharing products, services and expertise to help you with all of your home projects from plumbing, electric, painting and closets to patios, basements, cabinetry and roofing – just to name a few! We all want the home of our dreams, but how do we turn those dreams into a reality?

Jonathan and Drew Scott of HGTV's Property Brothers will be sharing a few of their tips with the Philly Home + Garden Show audience during presentation on the Main Stage on January 16th at 1pm.

The presentations will offer a sneak peek at the pair's upcoming book: Dream Home: The Property Brothers' Ultimate Guide to Finding & Fixing Your Perfect House, due out in April.

"Everyone should enjoy that feeling of calling their dream home 'home'." Jonathan explained. "This book is a fun, easy, step-by-step guide toward making that happen."

"We hope to inspire readers with a few never-before-heard stories and give them a peak into our whirlwind lives," Drew added.

Born in Canada, but now based in Las Vegas, the Scotts have been HGTV regulars since 2010 on such shows as Property Brothers, Buying & Selling, and Brother vs. Brother. They are identical twins, but each brings unique expertise to the table. Drew is a seasoned real estate agent, while Jonathan is a licensed contractor with 15 years' experience.

We're thrilled to welcome Jonathan and Drew to the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center and Oaks, and can't wait to see their stage presentation. But we're not stopping there! You have a chance to meet the brothers during a one-hour meet-and-greet at 2pm, immediately following their 1pm presentation. Free wristbands will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis at the box office/ticket window in the Hall A entrance of the Expo Center. Wristbands will be available starting at 9:30am on Saturday, January 16th. Everyone with a wristband will be asked to form a line near the stage immediately following their presentation, and those with wristbands are guaranteed to meet and take a picture with Jonathan and Drew.

All good things must come to an end – including the Vancouver Home + Design Show. The popular lifestyle exhibit, held at BC Place this past weekend, attracted more than 32,000 people to stop, shop and enjoy the show!

The 325+ exhibitors, exciting features and, of course, design celebrities, had people flocking from all over just to get a glimpse of the action. With the arrival of Jonathan and Drew Scott, stars of W Network’s Property Brothers, fans mobbed the Main Stage to hear their expert insight and gut-busting banter. Scotiabank hosted a special autograph signing at their booth for a chance to meet the boys, snap a photo and possibly even steal a kiss.

Jillian Harris and Todd Talbot, co-hosts of Love It orList It Vancouver, were another major draw to the HGTV Main Stage. The duo dazzled their fans with design tips and tricks while entertaining them with jokes and jabs – just like on their show!

The Samsung Passion for Fresh Cooking Challenge heated up the Vancouver Magazine Cooking Stage with a Food Network-style throwdown and a chance to win $7,000 worth of Samsung home appliances. Three seasoned chefs from local Italian restaurants paired with home cooks to battle it out for culinary supremacy under the watchful eye of Chef Massimo Capra, star of Restaurant Makeover, and host Colleen Christie. Chef Massimo went gaga for gluten-free cannelloni by Nathan Lowey from Campaganolo Roma and amateur culinarian Daniel, crowning them the winners of the spicy competition. Congratulations Nathan and Daniel!

The Ultimate Upcycle Challenge: Unhinged, brought back after its much-hyped 2012 debut, was a big success. The challenge raised a total of $560 for Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver and Vancouver ReStore. Seven locals put their DIY skills to the test to reuse, recycle and repurpose a single old door for $50. From a rustic vanity by Rebekah Gusway to a vampy portrait of Marilyn Monroe by Celina Dalrymple, the upcycled doors were instant crowd favourites. Visitors were invited to bid on their favourite piece in a silent auction.

Urban Barn’s Next Top Designer also drummed up a ton of buzz. Three finalists, Lianna Armstrong, Penelope Sloan and Laura Borrelli, were pushed beyond their comfort zone and tasked with designing living rooms based on a colour palette and a design style chosen in a draw. Exhibited on the show floor, the finished rooms were put to a public vote with one lucky voter winning a $5,000 shopping spree at Urban Barn. Freelance designer Penelope Sloan emerged victorious, winning herself a display at Urban Barn’s flagship South Granville store, a booth at next year’s show and well-deserved bragging rights. Congratulations Penelope!

In addition, this year’s Media Challenge paired the media with Toronto and York Region Fire Fighters to make the Ultimate Grilled Cheese.  With the assistance of the 'Big Cheese' himself, Kevin Durke, Cheesewerks delicious fun was had by all!  With the help of the cheeses, ingredients and the Hamilton Beach Panini Grill Gourmet Sandwich Maker every grilled cheese was it's own delicious invention!

Last but not least, the amazing Toronto Fall Home Show team deserves a nod...Thanks to them all for all their hard work and dedication.

Sadly, the Calgary Home + Design Show has come to an end, but the popular lifestyle exhibit didn’t go out without a bang! More than 32,000 people were in attendance this weekend to shop the show, enjoy the entertainment and delicious and check out the exciting design features on display at the BMO Centre.

Visitors came in droves to fawn over design celebrities Jonathan and Drew Scott from W Network’s Property Brothers and Jillian Harris and Todd Talbot from W Network’s Love It or List It Vancouver. The suited up and plaid clad brothers, Jonathan and Drew Scott, dispensed expert advice in their witty way, while Jillian and Todd had the crowd in stitches with their quick quips and ready banter.
Fans young and old lined up to snap a photo and have their Calgary Home + Design Show souvenirs autographed by the two design duos.

The Ultimate Upcycle Challenge: Unhinged was a tremendous success, raising a total of $1,333 to benefit Habitatfor Humanity Southern Alberta and ReStore Calgary. Six locales let their creative flags fly to reuse, recycle and repurpose a single old door for under $100. Some favourite upcycled doors included Mike Lam’s contemporary coffee table and Kait Kucy and Mackenzie Clarke’s multi-purpose home organizer. Visitors were invited to bid on their favourite piece in a silent auction.

The Samsung Passion for Fresh Cooking Challenge spiced up the Trail Appliances Cooking Stage by pitting three teams against one another for the chance to win $7,000 worth of Samsung home appliances. Three local home chefs were paired with former Food Network Top Chef Canada contestants, Chris Shaften, Geoff Rogers or Xavier Lacaze to battle it out under the watchful eye of host and celebrity chef Corbin Tomaszeki, host of Food Network’s Dinner Party Wars. Just to keep things interesting, Samsung threw a mystery ingredient into the mix, requiring each team to incorporate potatoes into their dishes. With the help of mentor Chef Geoff Rogers, local foodie Ryan Rust was named the victor thanks to his daring approach and skillful technique.

YYC’s biggest food fight took place on the Trail Appliances Main Stage on Sunday when some of the city’s favourite restaurants went stove top-to-stove top for the Food Truck Throwdown. Audience members cheered, jeered and tasted the goods, ultimately handing the winning title to crowd favourite Fries & Chix.

Thanks everyone for coming, see you in the spring at our
