The beginning of spring means that folks are about to start tackling the projects they were inspired to try at their local Marketplace Events home show. To help keep your creative juices flowing and continue to share advice, we’ve rounded up the top tips our home and garden experts shared with us this year. Read on for ideas from your favorite industry stars, including Drew and Jonathan Scott of HGTV’s Property Brothers, Alison Victoria from DIY Network’s Kitchen Crashers, and Dr. Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell from the Cooking Channel’s The Fabulous Beekman Boys.
On Home Decor Trends
Food Network’s Restaurant Impossible star Taniya Nayak says, “Don’t worry about following trends; do what makes you happy!”
Alison Victoria of DIY Network’s Kitchen Crashers reminds folks that, “Timeless design is hard to figure out for most people, but when it comes to your kitchen…avoid the ‘fads’. Kitchens are the hub of the home. They are also the most expensive room in the house, so make sure to select timeless hardscapes (ie. Cabinets, countertops, appliances). Have fun with the backsplash or the cabinet hardware so you’re not breaking the bank when you change them out down the road.”
On Finding the Right Person for the Job
HGTV’s Two Chicks and a Hammer star Karen Rominger encourages homeowners to “Interview multiple contractors. Pick someone whose price is not at the top or bottom of the price range for services in your area.”
Her daughter Mina Starsiak values references. “Pick someone based on referrals. And don’t always go for the cheapest. Sometimes you get what you pay for.”
On Improving Curb Appeal
Matt Muenster, star of HGTV’s and DIY Network’s Bath Crashers, explains that upkeep doesn’t have to be expensive. “Keeping your home looking its best doesn’t have to be time-consuming or expensive. Sweep the dead leaves off the sidewalk. Mow the grass. Add potted plants on the porch. A tidy house is always appealing and can fit any budget.”
Of course John Gidding, star of HGTV’s Curb Appeal: The Block, has something helpful to say about curb appeal. “Toss out those old, gold house number stickers! There are many newer styles of house numbers in black, nickel and stainless. Roll out the welcome mat! There’s no reason to hold onto that same muddy mat year after year. Welcome mats make a great style statement. They’re affordable and come in a variety of colors, shapes and motifs.”

If you do things right the first time, even if you’re starting small, it will save you a lot of time and money down the road. If you’re on a budget, spend the money on projects that could become safety issues, such as electrical. If you can’t afford a total renovation right away, try to make your home as comfortable as you can.”
Stars of the Cooking Channels The Fabulous Beekman Boys, Dr. Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell, have a great idea for getting creative with your space: “Take a photo of your home during every season, but actually look at it during a different season. For instance, study the winter home during the peak of summer. Having different perspective will help you think creatively.”

HGTV’s Vacation House for Free and DIY Network’s Yard Crashers star Matt Blashaw has an idea for livening up your flower beds: “I’m a big fan of fresh mulch. I consider mulch the paint of the backyard. A fresh coat laid in the flower beds brings a fresh look to any yard.”

In HGTV’s Vacation House for Free MattBlashaw uses his
love for construction and renovation to show how anyone can add value and
beauty to their home.
“Making mistakes in home design is ok; it’s the best way to learn how to do it yourself,” Matt says. “But the biggest mistake homeowners can avoid is starting too big. Start with a small project you can finish and be proud of. Then you’ll be inspired to keep going to create more beautiful additions to your home or landscape.”

When Matt isn’t building and reconstructing on HGTV and DIY Network, he’s…well, he’s building and reconstructing. But it’s who he’s doing it for that makes his
work with Build for
Love so special. Matt created the non-profit to provide support to children struggling
or recovering from an illness or disability. With a team of volunteers, Matt helps turn their home and outdoor living areas into fresh, fun, and safe places.
From new flooring, accessible ramps, and furniture to projects specifically
designed for each child, every makeover is unique and special.
Even after more than 100 television episodes of creating dream spaces for homeowners of Vacation House for Free and Yard Crashers, Matt never tires of seeing the joyful reactions during makeover reveals. He thought it would be amazing to bring that same sense of delight to children.
Recently Matt and his team created a play area for siblings with cystic fibrosis. Once confined to a boring corner of the room while receiving breathing treatments, they now have their own space where they can watch television, read books, and play with toys that are all within reach.
"When I was a child, I cherished the times I was able to run and play and learn from my own space," explains Matt. "Those experiences helped shape me into the person I am today, and I want children to be able to have that same opportunity."
He'll be bringing that passion and design know-how to the Oklahoma City Home + Garden Show, where he share tips and tricks of the trade to create amazing spaces for your own family to gather and enjoy.

Do you have the backyard of your dreams? DIY Network's Matt Blashaw has tricks to help you create an innovative and eye-catching backyard design. His background is in construction and DIY. After graduating from Chapman University in California, he went on to receive his contractor's license, pursuing home remodeling and real estate. Matt is currently the host of the hit series Yard Crashers, on both the DIY Network and HGTV. On the program, he shows us what it takes to dig up, rebuild, and ultimately transform barren and boring yards.
3 Questions for Matt:
Q: What has been one of your greatest challenges on Yard Crashers?
Matt: "My biggest challenge is coming up with innovative designs that are both spectacular and simple enough for any homeowner to attempt on their own. My team and I have to design and rebuild amazing outdoor spaces in just two days, so we all had to perfect speed building. Although our construction process is much shorter than average, I still want viewers to understand how the overall process works."
Q: What is one piece of advice you would give to a homeowner who is planning on starting a new outdoor project?
Matt: "First of all, don't bite off more than you can chew. Many homeowners are eager to get a large project done, so they try to renovate an entire space all at once. Split the big project into smaller pieces and accomplish one step at a time. This gives homeowners an opportunity to plan, budget, design, create, and eventually enjoy their space with ease."
Q: What do you plan on discussing at the Salt Lake Tribune Home + Garden Festival?
Matt: "I want the Salt Lake audience to learn how to start any outdoor project like a professional - from materials to budgeting and every fundamental in between. Everyone deserves the backyard of their dreams, and I have five simple projects homeowners can do that will totally impact the look and feel of their yard."
