"Hedberg is beginning 2016 by featuring the Tandem Wall retaining
wall system from Belgard. Homeowners can install patterned walls with the
appearance of chiseled stone. It allows for straight or curved walls as well as
free-standing walls.
We’re also featuring a new product line from Rochester
Concrete Products, the Vintage 6 retaining wall system. Vintage 6 is a
three-piece tumbled wall system that builds straight or radius walls and seat
walls without requiring cutting."
What can visitors expect to see from your company at the 2016 Minneapolis Home + Garden Show?
"Our exhibit is a mock-up of a house’s front yard and back
yard. It includes: a paved driveway, patio, back yard, water feature,
planter/seat wall, and additional features. We encourage attendees to stop by
and relax. We’re also going to invite attendees to register for our 2016 School
of Rock DIY seminars. By coming to our booth, they can see the full schedule
for all three Hedberg locations and sign up for seminars at any one of them."
What home and decor trends are you anticipating for 2016?
"Current design trends may have a bit to do with sustainable
design principles. Clay brick is seeing a resurgence – for both home exteriors
and for pavers. Some projects are even specifying reclaimed brick, and we have
actual handmold brick from Glen Gery. As people find more and better sources
for reclaimed wood, they’re using it particularly for accent walls.
In back yards, bubbling rock fountains and pondless
waterfalls are replacing or complementing ponds and regular pools because
they’re fun to watch and easy to maintain. We predict more interest in rustic
gabions for privacy walls and garden art. The gabion is an ancient landscaping
device.
People are also discovering that prices have decreased for some
natural stone to the point where they are nearly equivalent with those of manufactured
stone, so they’re using thin veneer natural stone for exteriors and interiors."
What inspires your products?
"We’re best known for natural stone, concrete pavers and
walls, masonry and water gardening. Our products are natural, timeless,
resilient, and fundamental. The finishes and features we offer support many
types of decor, from traditional to modern to rustic to neoclassical. We enable
this through offering a wide product selection, decades of experience with
trusted suppliers and custom fabrication of stone."
What's your favorite part of the Minneapolis Home + Garden Show?
"Our favorite part of the show is acting as trusted advisers
to homeowners who are seeking solutions. Our mission is to help our customers
be more successful, regardless of products. We often end up introducing
homeowners to licensed contractors who are also at the show. Based on the
conversations we have at this show, we tune into people’s dreams for their home
and help them realize those visions."
What is your creative process like? How do you work with clients?
"We engage homeowners at multiple points along the project
path. Sometimes homeowners visit one of our locations and see a project or a
finish that they like; other times they visit our website and see a
project gallery; still other instances they are sent by a professional to
Hedberg to make selections. We have arguably the best masonry showroom in the
metro area, where customers can take their time with pleasant, knowledgeable
staff to select products for their projects."

Outdoor landscaping projects can seem pretty daunting; after all, your yard essentially gives visitors the first impression of what kinds of design elements to expect when they walk through your front door. Thankfully there are outdoor design and lifestyle experts like HGTV's Carson Arthur, host of Critical Listing and Green Force, who are here to help guide your next project in the right direction.
Where To Start
Like every renovation project, Carson says that sticking to a budget is the absolute key to a successful landscaping project.
"Always start with useable space," he says. "Budget for that deck or the patio because this is where you will spend the majority of your time in the backyard. Having a beautiful lawn to look at is one thing, but having somewhere for the family to sit is by far the priority...and the biggest investment."
Carson really stresses the value of useable space, explaining that it is important to plan your renovation around a timeline because it can impact your budget depending on your future plans.
"Really consider how long you want to be in the home. Items like a new deck have a shorter lifespan than a patio. Maybe opting for a more expensive patio is a wiser decision than paying to replace a worn out deck."
Tips & Tricks
Often there are yard spaces that just aren't as big as we would like them to be. To maximize a smaller space, Carson has two words: go vertical!
"Adding a great pergola over a small backyard gives instant impact. Pergolas help re-enforce the concept of outdoor room by defining the space and creating overhead privacy."
Think before you act and have a plan. Carson attributes homeowners' most common mistakes to rushing a renovation without thinking of key elements. He says that there is danger in buying a bunch of garden accessories without actually having a long-term vision.
"Before anyone starts any backyard gardening, I always advise on having a real design done so that you never have to move, dig up, or cut down any of your new investments."
To avoid these potential disasters, consider bringing in an expert. Carson says that hiring a respectable designer can actually save you a lot of money by providing guidance and project knowledge.
"Too many outdoor DIY projects go horribly wrong, costing the homeowner time and money. I'm all for saving on the budget, but when installing outdoors, there is a whole new set of variables that most home builders have never worked with before."

Do you have the backyard of your dreams? DIY Network's Matt Blashaw has tricks to help you create an innovative and eye-catching backyard design. His background is in construction and DIY. After graduating from Chapman University in California, he went on to receive his contractor's license, pursuing home remodeling and real estate. Matt is currently the host of the hit series Yard Crashers, on both the DIY Network and HGTV. On the program, he shows us what it takes to dig up, rebuild, and ultimately transform barren and boring yards.
3 Questions for Matt:
Q: What has been one of your greatest challenges on Yard Crashers?
Matt: "My biggest challenge is coming up with innovative designs that are both spectacular and simple enough for any homeowner to attempt on their own. My team and I have to design and rebuild amazing outdoor spaces in just two days, so we all had to perfect speed building. Although our construction process is much shorter than average, I still want viewers to understand how the overall process works."
Q: What is one piece of advice you would give to a homeowner who is planning on starting a new outdoor project?
Matt: "First of all, don't bite off more than you can chew. Many homeowners are eager to get a large project done, so they try to renovate an entire space all at once. Split the big project into smaller pieces and accomplish one step at a time. This gives homeowners an opportunity to plan, budget, design, create, and eventually enjoy their space with ease."
Q: What do you plan on discussing at the Salt Lake Tribune Home + Garden Festival?
Matt: "I want the Salt Lake audience to learn how to start any outdoor project like a professional - from materials to budgeting and every fundamental in between. The exhibition, like the newly integrated organization, will offer visitors an opportunity to explore the trees and plants within both rural and urban settings and to discover how greener communities will improve the region and beyond.

Cleveland rocks and so does this garden! Visitors will not only be greeted by the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inspired glass pyramid structure, but will also enjoy concerts taking place on stage featuring various musical instrument water features. Upcycled musical instruments further complement this garden, including a drum set chandelier hanging over a sleek bar inset with a unique French horn vase and a grand piano with a shelving unit archiving rock and roll memorabilia. Come and see how beautiful Ohio can be at this Virginia Kendall Park inspired outdoor living space. Visitors will feel as if they were out in the woods as they walk the path leading past a waterfall and down to the casual fire area. From there, continue on to discover a rustic pavilion complete with an outdoor kitchen on the terrace with accent beams resting on stone pillars, creating the perfect place to entertain.

Designed and installed by members of the Ohio Landscape Association (OLA), this garden is constructed with a combination of both natural and manufactured stone products and lush plantings. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the OLA is a non-profit trade association for landscape contractors and their suppliers with members from all across the state.

Garden Theme: Growing Together: The Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden
The Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden are growing together for a greener, healthier Northeast Ohio. This exhibit will feature elements from the gardens of both institutions and will highlight the similarities and differences of their two distinct landscapes. The exhibition, like the newly integrated organization, will offer visitors an opportunity to explore the trees and plants within both rural and urban settings and to discover how greener communities will improve the region and beyond.

Garden Theme: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Cleveland rocks and so does this garden! Visitors will not only be greeted by the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inspired glass pyramid structure, but will also enjoy concerts taking place on stage featuring various musical instrument water features. Upcycled musical instruments further complement this garden, including a drum set chandelier hanging over a sleek bar inset with a unique French horn vase and a grand piano with a shelving unit archiving rock and roll memorabilia. Other features include walls of lush green turf, a guitar-shaped reflecting pool with a brass instrument water sculpture in the center, modern plant combinations, deciduous trees, and an interactive graffiti wall.

Water gardening is a fun, creative way to beautify your backyard and create a tranquil oasis just outside your door. If you've ever wanted to learn how to cultivate one of these gorgeous gardens or if you just enjoy the view, don't miss the Water Garden Society of Greater Kansas City (WGSGKC)at the Johnson County Home & Garden Show Feb. 28 - March 2, 2014. They'll be sharing some truly stunning water garden displays as well as their best tips for how you can get started.

Why should someone stop by and see you at the show?
Our booth is always exciting and fresh. This year, we have collected old instruments and items and made them into yard art and water features. We are also giving people ideas for what you can do with items you already have or can pick up pre-owned. From a simple guitar with just some bright poles to using a piano as a main water attraction, you can see how to do it at our booth!

What is the most important trend this year and for spring?
What we are seeing from all the lawn-related sources are bright colors; from bright stools to bright metal art to hang on your fences. We are also seeing a lot of these chickens, ducks and owls. We have even seen fairy chicken coops at many stores. Repurposing items to use in new ways seems to be a big trend. At our booth, you'll see us getting a lot of use out of old instruments and even old iron baby cribs.

If someone wants to set up a water garden in their yard, what are the considerations?
The first step is for them to decide if they are doing it themselves or having a contractor do it for them. Secondly, they need to take into consideration what size and type of yard they have. Do they want to have a waterfall and no pond, or a pond made mostly for fish and plants? What are the city regulations on having a pond? Find a club or society and learn from seminars and lectures. A little research on the front end may make your water gardening experience a much better one overall.
What is essential water garden maintenance?
A water garden is an ecosystem. If set up with the right balance of water flow, fish and plants it can be relatively easy to maintain. If set up with too much of one thing (and that one thing could be the sun), you may have a big algae problem. With modern technology, ponds are a lot easier to manage, from using ultraviolet lights to ion-mates or ion-gens that produce small amounts of copper. They both help in controlling algae. When you join WGSGKC, you'll receive a terrific handbook that gives all kinds of troubleshooting hints.
In your opinion, what are the most essential gardening tools?
In water gardening, a good net is going to save you a lot of time. In the autumn when the leaves start to fall, a cover net will keep them out of your water and pumps. This prevents a large fall cleanup to stabilize the water quality. A skimmer net is also nice because it gives you the ability to remove floating debris without having to actually step into your pond.

Since Chris and Peyton Lambton's appearances on ABC's The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, the happy couple has dedicated their time to transforming backyards one house at a time in their HGTV series, Going Yard. Chris' background in landscaping and Peyton's background in design make them the perfect pair. Together, they create outdoor living spaces and features including patios, arbors and water features for deserving homeowners.
They'll be swinging by the Metropolitan Lawn & Garden Show on Feb. 7-9 to speak about being sustainable in your own backyard, but first, they decided to give us a few of their best pointers.
Where do you start when preparing a new garden or backyard space?
You should always begin by becoming familiar with the space and the current conditions. The biggest factor in gardening that you can't control is the sun. Some parts of the yard will have full sun, while others will have partial sun or shade. You need to plant accordingly.
What are your top 5 tips for backyard sustainability?
1. Designate a compost area.
2. Recycle rainwater.
3. Water at proper times of the day.
4. Plant native.
5. Grow your own vegetables and herbs.
Where do you gather most of your inspiration for new projects?
We get inspiration in learning from clients about what they want to get out of their outdoor space. Their likes and passions are transformed into something they will be able to use and enjoy.
What design/gardening trend or item are you coveting this season?
Fermentation gardening is our favorite trend of the year. This encompasses growing your own grapes, hops and apples for wine, beer or hard cider.
