Kansas City may be buried in snow right now, but spring is just a couple of months away, making it the perfect time to prepare your home. ALH Home Renovations, LCC will be exhibiting at the Metropolitan Lawn & Garden Show this weekend, Feb. 7-9, 2014, but first, check out a few of their tips to help you along. They also shared advice to aid in renovating, remodeling and selecting the right design professional for your job.
Tell us something unique about your product or business that we wouldn't know.
We pride ourselves on the ALH Process. More specifically, our proposals and customer service. Our itemized proposals are divided up into 28 different categories, ranging from excavating to painting to drywall. This is an educational tool as much as a proposal. The client will know the different parts and pieces that go into a remodeling project, and this attention to detail is carried over to the rest of the project. We are a national customer service award-winning design and remodeling company. We feel that a clear and continuous line of communication between ourselves and the client from initial meeting to completion of project is the key to a successful project.
What trends do you follow?
We do not believe in following trends. Trends come and go. We believe in tailoring our remodeling project to the individual wants and needs of our clients. Although we are aware of design trends, we do not force clients to adhere to them. We advise our clients to make their spaces into what they want, not what is trendy. Because, at the end of the day, our clients are the ones living in the space, not us.
What steps should people take to prepare their homes for spring?
Keep an eye on your roofs to be sure that the snow is melting evenly and location of icicles. A roof with melting or unevenly melting snow may be a sign of inadequate insulation in your attic. Secondly, if you are considering any remodeling or landscaping projects, plan them now while the weather is cold. Proper preparations prior to construction gives you more time to enjoy the finished project in the warmer weather.
What is the most important thing to keep in mind when renovating a room?
Make sure you have realistic expectations before starting anything, scope of work, timeline and budget. Consider features you must have, what you can do without and how they impact the bottom line. Also, have an understanding of what you want the finished project to be.
Before you consult a professional, have an understanding of a few things:
What is your design style?
Things you like and don't like?
How is the space currently being used?
How do you want it to be used?
Design professionals can assist you in making these decisions, but having an understanding of what you want prior to consulting a professional will help streamline the design phase of your project. Finally, make all design decision prior to construction. Living in a disturbed space can quickly become stressful, so knowing what is going where before construction helps the project to move quickly and minimize the disruption to your daily life.
Is there anything special that show attendees should look forward to at your booth?

Since Chris and Peyton Lambton's appearances on ABC's The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, the happy couple has dedicated their time to transforming backyards one house at a time in their HGTV series, Going Yard. Chris' background in landscaping and Peyton's background in design make them the perfect pair. Together, they create outdoor living spaces and features including patios, arbors and water features for deserving homeowners.
They'll be swinging by the Metropolitan Lawn & Garden Show on Feb. 7-9 to speak about being sustainable in your own backyard, but first, they decided to give us a few of their best pointers.
Where do you start when preparing a new garden or backyard space?
You should always begin by becoming familiar with the space and the current conditions. The biggest factor in gardening that you can't control is the sun. Some parts of the yard will have full sun, while others will have partial sun or shade. You need to plant accordingly.
What are your top 5 tips for backyard sustainability?
1. Designate a compost area.
2. Recycle rainwater.
3. Water at proper times of the day.
4. Plant native.
5. Grow your own vegetables and herbs.
Where do you gather most of your inspiration for new projects?
We get inspiration in learning from clients about what they want to get out of their outdoor space. Their likes and passions are transformed into something they will be able to use and enjoy.
What design/gardening trend or item are you coveting this season?
Fermentation gardening is our favorite trend of the year. This encompasses growing your own grapes, hops and apples for wine, beer or hard cider.

If someone wanted to make one change to their home or garden this year, what should it be?
Plant a fruit tree. It's a great investment. Fresh apples, tart cherries, peaches, etc. can be frozen, canned or turned into jellies, juices, even wine.
When planning a new garden space, what is the most important first step?
Make sure the space has adequate sunlight and drains well. Before digging, call to make sure there are no underground lines.
Name five major DIY tips that anyone could take advantage of now.
Always plan out your garden before planting, start plants from seed in the winter to save money and get more choice in plant varieties, build your own garden structures like composters and cold frames, buy our bok to learn how to do all that and finally, come to the show to hear our talk on Gardening 101.
What is the most important trend this year for spring?
Edible landscape is a biggie. Planting food crops that look good in the yard. But home veggie gardening overall is a growing trend.
Why should someone stop by and see you at the show?
Because we have more than 25 years of experience in home vegetable gardening in Kansas City and can answer many of your gardening questions. Plus, we're fun to talk with.

DIY, FLOWERS, GARDENING, KANSAS CITY, metropolitan lawn & garden show, mike nocks, seeds, vegetables, white harvest seed company No comments
Now that the holidays are over, it's time to think about the coming spring and how you can best prepare your garden for a bountiful harvest. Mike Nocks from White Harvest Seed Company will be at the Metropolitan Lawn & Garden Show Feb. 7-9, 2014 at the American Royal Center to gvie presentations on heirloom seeds, hybrids and GMOs. In the meantime, we asked him for tips, tricks and trends to get your garden growing.
What is the most important trend for this year and for spring?
There has been a growing movement in the past few years of folks wanting healthier, safer renewable food sources. Heirloom seeds give gardeners all three of those things. Heirlooms are non-genetically modified varieties and when grown properly, they provide a seed supply for years to come. Another thing we've noticed becoming more popular is sprouting seed for quick and highly nutritious food sources.

If someone wanted to make one change to their garden this year, what should it be?
Besides heirloom seeds for supplying your future seed needs in case of limited supply, I would suggest looking into condensed gardening techniques. This is where different varieties of seeds are planted closer together to maximize production in space available. This makes it possible to grow more food for the family's future needs and learn how to store it long-term. It allows you to turn your yard and flower beds into your personal supermarket!

When planning a new garden space, what is the most important first step?
Gardens need three things to be successful: Good fertilized soil, reliable water source and adequate light. Soil can be revitalized and water can be brought in (most of the time), but since most plants need at minimum six hours of sunlight daily, be sure to plan out your garden space so it gets plenty of sun. Then focus on the soil and water needs.

Then focus on the soil and water needs.
Name five major DIY organic gardening tips that anyone could take advantage of now.
- Raised bed and weed-free gardening. The results that can be obtained in condensed, soil-less gardening will amaze you. For instance, you can harvest 100 quarts of beans from a 4' x 16' raised bed in a year, or over 250 pounds of tomatoes off from a single plant.
- Composting. You can never have enough quality compost for your gardening needs. Consistent, simple techniques yield benefits.
- Learn seed saving and proper storage techniques. They can protect your family's future and save money.
- Be willing to try new planting and growing techniques. Don't say, "I've never tried that before, but I know it won't work!"
- Use all-natural fertilizers and insect and plant disease control. If folks realized how toxic certain chemicals are, they would stop using them right away.
Come by and see us and we will explain in further detail!
In your opinion, what are the most essential gardening tools?
That all depends on how you garden. Container gardening needs only a high-quality hand hoe and watering can. Raised bed gardening needs minimal tools but a good watering system. Conventional row cropping gardens need a high-quality scuffle hoe and good tiller or mantis.

2014 trend: flex space. (Photo: KCH&G) |
Before you get started planning your renovations, take a look at some of these tips and trends KCH&G shared with us.
What are some trends we'll see this year?
Homeowners will continue to maximize space within their homes, with built-ins; special storage nooks for appliances, pets, etc.; bigger closets and garages and increased pantry space in the kitchen. Flexible space within open floor plans will continue to be a top request in the home-building industry. Aesthetically, you'll see more double-duty furnishings and colorful home decor accessories. Don't be afraid to incorporate some of the new 2014 colors of the year into your home, either in the form of throw pillows and vases (which are easy to change out) or as an accent wall. Homeowners can find more trends and ideas on our website at kchandg.com or on our blog at kchandg.com/blog.

If someone wanted to make one change to their home or garden, what should it be?
Another continuing trend we'll see in 2014 is transitional indoor/outdoor space, those rooms that bring the outdoors in and vice versa.

Transition from inside to out. (Photo: KCH&G) |
If you're looking to remodel/add a space, sunrooms/screened-in porches, lanais/decks or an updated outdoor living space (including outdoor kitchens) will be well-received by friends and family (as well as by realtors/buyers if you're looking to sell one day).

When planning a new home or garden space, what is the most important first step?
Be sure to research and use a local industry professional, including home builders, remodelers, architects, interior designers, landscape designers and contractors. (KCH&G's marketplace is a good starting point.) They'll be able to turn your dream into a reality in a professional manner.
Why should someone stop by and see you at the show?
We'll be giving out a variety of complimentary magazines, so if you missed a past issue, you can pick it up here. Each of our magazines features a wide range of ideas for the homeowner looking to remodel, build new, revamp their interiors or spruce up an outdoor living space. This year, KCH&G is partnering with Designer Consignment Furniture & Interiors on our booth design. Rather than providing a standard show booth, we'll have an inviting sitting area, kind of a mini living room, so come see us!
