A recent trends that's been gaining popularity is having a loud front door - and no, we're not talking about your doorbell volume. Painting your door a non-traditional color is becoming more and more commonplace. Rich tones like eggplant and ox blood were easy to adopt, but now homeowners are attempting more vibrant colors like chartreuse and magenta.

Check out the painted doors below and let us know which one you'd prefer. Would you dare to try Option A's sunny hue? Or would you feel more comfortable with Option B's purple perfection? Which choice makes you yell shut the front door (so I can look at it)?

Option A

Option B

Our Choice:

Although we really like both doors, we prefer Option A. The yellow complements the white trim and antique lantern, and isn't too flashy. The plants surrounding the door are also a very playful accent. This seems like a lovely door to kiss goodnight in front of or to lock up every morning on your way to work.

You probably have a few colorful front doors in your neighborhood, so we have to ask: what color is your door? Have you thought about painting it recently? Is there a color that you absolutely would not paint your door? Let us know below. And of course, for  more home design tips and inspiration make sure to head to the Marketplace Events home show nearest you - US Shows and Canadian Shows.

Give your home and garden a fresh look for the new year with ideas and inspiration from Kansas City Homes & Gardens. Don't miss seeing the magazine during the Metropolitan Lawn & Garden Show and the Kansas City Remodeling Show Feb. 7-9, 2014 at the American Royal Center.

2014 trend: flex space. (Photo: KCH&G)
Before you get started planning your renovations, take a look at some of these tips and trends KCH&G shared with us.

What are some trends we'll see this year?
Homeowners will continue to maximize space within their homes, with built-ins; special storage nooks for appliances, pets, etc.; bigger closets and garages and increased pantry space in the kitchen. Flexible space within open floor plans will continue to be a top request in the home-building industry. Aesthetically, you'll see more double-duty furnishings and colorful home decor accessories. Don't be afraid to incorporate some of the new 2014 colors of the year into your home, either in the form of throw pillows and vases (which are easy to change out) or as an accent wall. Homeowners can find more trends and ideas on our website at kchandg.com or on our blog at kchandg.com/blog.

If someone wanted to make one change to their home or garden, what should it be?

Another continuing trend we'll see in 2014 is transitional indoor/outdoor space, those rooms that bring the outdoors in and vice versa.

Transition from inside to out. (Photo: KCH&G)
If you're looking to remodel/add a space, sunrooms/screened-in porches, lanais/decks or an updated outdoor living space (including outdoor kitchens) will be well-received by friends and family (as well as by realtors/buyers if you're looking to sell one day).

When planning a new home or garden space, what is the most important first step?

Be sure to research and use a local industry professional, including home builders, remodelers, architects, interior designers, landscape designers and contractors. (KCH&G's marketplace is a good starting point.) They'll be able to turn your dream into a reality in a professional manner.

Why should someone stop by and see you at the show?

We'll be giving out a variety of complimentary magazines, so if you missed a past issue, you can pick it up here. Each of our magazines features a wide range of ideas for the homeowner looking to remodel, build new, revamp their interiors or spruce up an outdoor living space. This year, KCH&G is partnering with Designer Consignment Furniture & Interiors on our booth design. Rather than providing a standard show booth, we'll have an inviting sitting area, kind of a mini living room, so come see us!
