Gnomes have always been misunderstood. Are they prankster with a mean streak? Or benevolent woodland creatures sent to protect people? Fresh off their century-long ban from the esteemed Chelsea Flower Show, (lifted in 2013), gnomes are making a comeback - and they're brighter and bolder than ever!
We are pleased to announce that the 2015 Salt Lake Tribune Home + Garden Festival will be participating in the Better Gnomes & Gardens DIY exhibit. Show attendees will have the opportunity to bid via silent auction on these quirky keepsakes: whimsical garden gnomes decorated by 12 personalities from HGTV (including Ty Pennington!) and Utah's local TV and radio shows. All of the proceeds will go directly to Primary Children's Hospital. Before you see them at the show, get a sneak peek at all the gnomes on our Facebook page - you can even vote for your favorite!
This project was designed as a way to promote sustainable urban farming and social enterprise initiatives in a unique and interesting way. Here are a few highlights you can look forward to on the stage:
- Move that bus! Ty Pennington will be charming show-goers as he takes the stage Saturday at 11am. You can expect to be entertained and informed as this DIY superstar from TLC's Trading Spaces, ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and TNT's On The Menu, make his first visit to the Minneapolis Home + Garden Show. Ty is presented by Wings Financial Credit Union.
- Twin Cities Live will be broadcasting live for the third year in a row on Thursday at 3pm - Megan Newquist will fill-in for Elizabeth Reis who is on maternity leave. Megan joins TCL co-host Steve Patterson in providing helpful tips and chatting with experts.
- New York Farm Boys, Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Dr. Brent Ridge, are the force behind the Cooking Channel's The Fabulous Beekman Boys, and lifestyle brand Beekman: 1802. The boys will be guests on Twin Cities Live Thursday and will present on the Ace Hardware Paint Studio Lifestyle Stage at 7pm that night, as well as Friday at 2pm and 6pm.
- DIY blog lovers will be thrilled to hear home decoration and organization expert, Ursula Carmona, tell how she beautifies her home (sometimes with spray paint and glitter). Catch Ursula Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 11am and 3pm.
- Once again, our "Man on the Avenue" Products expert Sasha Andreev will give us the inside scoop on the best new products of 2015. Visit "Innovation Avenue LIVE" on the Ace Hardware Paint Studio Lifestyle Stage on Wednesday at 7pm, Saturday at 5pm, and Sunday at 2pm.

The Paxton is the first of its kind to be featured at the Indianapolis Home Show. The home is designed for comfort - each type of living space is on its own floor. The main floor is for entertaining, with an open kitchen and great room, while the owner's retreat is just a few steps away. - Chet Pourciau (Chet): "Something from my shop of course! Usually my signature candle!"
- Chet: "A personal trainer. I love working with and encouraging other people."
- Chet: "Making people happy!"
- Chet: "Lighting is very important."
- Chet: "I'd rather watch sports!"
- Chet: "Right now, Iberia Parish where I grew up. I have based my new home furnishings line on it."
- Chet: "I think I now pay more attention to the small details."
- Chet: "Paella. Everyone likes it and you probably have everything you need to make it in your house already."
- Chet: "I was one Mr. Bingle!" (A famous New Orleans Christmas snowman character)
- Chet: "We will be seeing a lot of brass accessories."
- Chet: "I will always remember a young artist from the Magnolia Special School. His mother had just died and he told me how proud she would have been to see him on TV."
- Chet: "Say a little prayer."
- Chet: "I'm having some custom designed gas lanterns made for my home."
- Chet: "Pay attention to color and lighting. It will give you the biggest bang for your buck."
- Chet: "Be careful about being too 'on trend'. You may regret it in about six months!"

camera, we take a lot more pictures than previous generations. We
don’t have piles of disorganized Polaroids in the closet anymore; instead,
we’ve got an abstract collection of images in the cloud. How can we keep them
manageable, viewed on more than just Facebook, and part of our everyday lives? The
one and only, Ty Pennington, has some great tips to help organize our pictures,
create art with our memories, and keep our shots for years to come.
“I use tools everyday on the job, but
along with my hammer and drill, the one tool you’ll always find me on is my
camera. I love taking pictures of friends and family, but also of textures and
patterns and anything that strikes me as cool, beautiful or unusual. With
today’s digital cameras, it’s easier than ever to snap and save. But here are a
couple of things for all you shutterbugs to remember. The next time you
download pictures from your camera to the computer, take the time to go through
and give each shot a title. It’ll be worth it when you’re trying to find that
one great picture six months later. Next, organize photos using the software
that came with your camera or check the web. Online, you’ll find photo-editing
software, free photo-storing services, plus art-design software that will turn
up copies of all your photos. This is a good idea, even if you use one of those
storage services on the internet. Whatever you do, don’t depend on the hard
drive of your computer to be the only place you keep your precious memories.”

It’s hard to
believe that football season has officially kicked off with the start of
college football. And you know what football season means: tailgating! No
tailgate or at-home football party is complete without firing up the grill. But
if you’re looking to serve more than traditional brats, we know that some of
you love your Gator or whatever animal mascot your alma mater is playing, then
you might be in need of some tips from our friend Ty Pennington, a southerner
who knows his way around gas, propane and charcoal grills. Check out Ty’s
tailgating tips below.
“Before you host your next outdoor soiree,
here are a few pointers. Hamburgers, hot dogs. These are pretty straightforward
grilling. You put them on top of the flame, cook with direct heat, and a few
flips later, you got your grub. But if you want to cook thick steaks or a whole
fish, use indirect heat. Place your food away from the hottest part of the
grill, keep the lid closed, and cook the food longer. This is how traditional
barbecue is made – using indirect heat at lower temperatures for longer periods
of time. Indirect heat can really make for some juicy and delicious meals. To
make sure your meat will be tender, not tough, it’s helpful to have a meat
thermometer to check for temperatures. Be sure to stick it in the thickest part
of the meat away from the bone. And I’ll let you in on a little grilling secret
we southerners know to be true. If you let your seasoned meats warm to room
temp before grilling, you’ll definitely get a more flavorful meal.”

The first-ever Cleveland Home + Remodeling Expo kicks off today at the Cleveland Convention Center with new and
innovative trends and products in home remodeling and design!
The excitement begins on The Main
Stage at 1 p.m. with a presentation on “Great Weekend Projects” from the Main
Stage Emcee Matt Fox, co-host of HGTV’s Room
by Room and host and producer of the public television series Around the House with Matt and Shari.
You can catch him again at 4 p.m.
Next, stick around for Metro Home’s presentation
on “Modern Design, Classic and Timeless” at 2 p.m., followed by John Hall discussing
“25 Design Tips Toward that Perfect Kitchen” at 3 p.m.
Later on the Main Stage, don’t miss
home and remodeling celebrities! Presented by Cambria, Ramsin Khachi, the internationally recognized
design/build contractor and Canadian television personality, will appear on the
Main Stage at 5 p.m., followed by Nicole Curtis, Host
of DIY Network and HGTV’s Rehab Addict,
at 6 p.m.
Wrapping
up the presentations for today is Jim Price from Refrigeration Sales Corp.,
discussing “Home Energy Management and Maintenance” at 7 p.m.
Highlights
on the Main Stage Saturday include another presentation from Ramsin Khachi at 3
p.m. and Nicole Curtis at noon and 4 p.m. Also, known most recently for his
work on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,
charismatic home design guru Ty Pennington,
presented by Carrier, will appear on the Main Stage at 1 p.m.! An autograph
session will follow.
In addition to these scheduled events, be sure to tour the Perrino Vignettes created by Perrino Builders & Furniture that will inspire you with ways to remodel
your kitchen, create your own pub or wine bar, or design a home theater! The Ultimate Garage, created by EncoreGarage of Ohio,
will also inspire visitors with ideas on how to reclaim your space and make it
