Yes, it's that time of year again - spring is in the air and flowers are in bloom. Owner of Lil' Pink Daisy Florals and Calgary Home + Garden Show Home + Garden Stage presenter, Joanna Tzavaras, is gearing up for the season and sharing her top three tips on how to complete the perfect garden-inspired DIY projects. Whether you're contemplating new planters, looking to improve your floral arrangement skills, or dreaming up new centerpiece ideas, Joanna has just the advice for you.
DIY Flower Pots
Planters are a great way to add a pop of colour and curb appeal to your outdoor space, especially when displayed with the plants of your choice. Be aware of your planter size when choosing garden flowers or plants, and make sure to keep the temperament and type of flower in mind. Choose flowers that only complement each other aesthetically, but also have the same needs. For example, flowers that require full sun should be planted together, and flowers that require partial sun or shade should be planted just the same. This will not only increase the longevity of your new masterpiece, but it will give you the most bang for your buck.
Combine Colour Palettes
You should never be afraid to combine colour palettes among your floral arrangements, especially if you love high impact bouquets. Use your imagination to mix various types of flowers in different colour families and textures for a swoon-worthy arrangement. For outdoor entertaining during the spring and summer, the brighter the better!

We've all heard about them before, and their longevity paired with their modern aesthetic makes them the plant type of choice for months to come! Succulents are great for long lasting table centrepieces, especially for outdoor dining. Terrariums, in particular, are not only stylish and low-maintenance, they are also really easy to create. Find yourself a fishbowl and let the layering begin! Add moist soil, and choose 3-4 small succulents to plant into the dirt. Next, add rocks or beach glass, and finish with moss to add texture and a fresh pop of colour. Voila - it's as simple as that!

Welcome to the Cuyahoga Valley National Railway, featuring a 1/8 scale working steam locomotive. Stroll along the replica of lock 37 and enjoy the sights and smells of spring along the railway. The garden is designed and constructed by high school junior and senior Landscape Horticulture students, with assistance from the Construction Technology program from Auburn Career Center.

Garden Theme: Virginia Kendall Park, Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Come and see how beautiful Ohio can be at this Virginia Kendall Park inspired outdoor living space. Visitors will feel as if they were out in the woods as they walk the path leading past a waterfall and down to the casual fire area. From there, continue on to discover a rustic pavilion complete with an outdoor kitchen on the terrace with accent beams resting on stone pillars, creating the perfect place to entertain.

Garden Theme: Stan Hywet Hall
Be transported back to the elegance and glamour of the Roaring Twenties as you take a stroll through this Stan Hywet Hall inspired garden. The Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden are growing together for a greener, healthier Northeast Ohio. This exhibit will feature elements from the gardens of both institutions and will highlight the similarities and differences of their two distinct landscapes. The exhibition, like the newly integrated organization, will offer visitors an opportunity to explore the trees and plants within both rural and urban settings and to discover how greener communities will improve the region and beyond.

Cleveland rocks and so does this garden! Visitors will not only be greeted by the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inspired glass pyramid structure, but will also enjoy concerts taking place on stage featuring various musical instrument water features. Upcycled musical instruments further complement this garden, including a drum set chandelier hanging over a sleek bar inset with a unique French horn vase and a grand piano with a shelving unit archiving rock and roll memorabilia. Other features include walls of lush green turf, a guitar-shaped reflecting pool with a brass instrument water sculpture in the center, modern plant combinations, deciduous trees, and an interactive graffiti wall.

Interested in low-impact, environmentally responsible ways to make your mark? Look no further than moss graffiti. Also called eco-graffiti or green graffiti, this unique alternative to spray paint is considered a form of guerrilla gardening. Instead of using harsh and damaging chemicals, artists use a paint brush and moss "paint" that grows on its own. You can create an original look and leave the space greener than when you found it! Get your lawn healthy & keep it that way!
2. Don't rip your grass, keep your lawnmower blade nice and sharp throughout the season.
3. When grass is cut it loses more water, mow in the evening to keep grass from drying up.
4. Your lawn needs an inch of water a week to stay healthy, measure this by leaving a measuring cup on your lawn when watering.
5. Adjust your lawnmower so that it does not cut too short. Grass benefits from it's own shade.
6. Ease up on the fertilizer, too much can burn your grass.7. Make sure you are using the right grass seeds for the right areas, shady spots may require a different blend.
8. Move furniture around. When your garden furniture is in the same place too long, the grass underneath it dies.
9. Weed weekly to keep seeds from spreading.
10. Provide your dog with an area that is grass free so he can urinate without staining your lawn. This requires some dog training skills too!

All good things must come to an end!
The 2014 Calgary Home + Garden Show took the BMO Centre & Corral by storm this past weekend, hosting thousands of visitors seeking real advice, real inspiration and real experts on all things home improvement.
The Stage Farm® Main Stage was brimming with world-class talent dispensing the best tips in the biz. Fan favourites including HGTV stars Bryan Baeumler and Tommy Smythe talked construction, decor and life in the home improvement limelight, while local personalities Alykhan Velji and Heather Draper walked guests through the dos and don’ts of design.
The first-ever Better Gnomes & Gardens exhibit was a resounding (and adorable) success. Calgary’s most notable personalities joined forces in the name of charity, each turning a plain white garden gnome into a whimsical treasure. The bearded fellows were put up for auction at the show, raising more than $2,000 to benefit Grow Calgary, Canada’s largest urban agricultural farm dedicated to providing fresh produce to all Calgarians by way of the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank. Vincent Van Gnome, SHAW TV host Erin Strate’s colourful creation, took home the top bid of $325.
Nu Automations stole the show with the Nu Smart Home, a next-generation dwelling complete with automatic thermostat, window coverings and entertainment system. Calgarians taking respite from the low temperatures warmed while learning how to control all parts of their home with just the tap of a touch-screen – thermostat included.
