A perennial favorite, the 2015 Feature Gardens' theme is Twin Cities Best Backyards and will showcase nine landscapers' take on the area's best outdoor spaces.

FEBRUARY 25 - MARCH 1, 2015.
This year's categories include:
- Boulder Creations by Stonewall: Imagine dozens of huge boulders creating a cozy, two-level patio area and fire pit, and that's what you'll find here. And when we say boulders, we're talking one-to-three tons each!
- Northwest Orient by Holm & Olsom Landscape Design & Construction: The team went all out to transport show-goers to Japan with this one. There will be an outdoor kitchen, bamboo kakei spout fountain, petrified wood water feature, and gravel garden. But wait, there's more! Japanese maple trees, pom-pom junipers, mugo pines, and hydrangeas.
- Come On Over by Bever Landscape Design Group: Technology meets the outdoors here, with music, lighting, and an AV system all together. The color-saturated garden beds will please the eye and the ears are treated to music playing, and let's not forget to mention the TV and outdoor kitchen!
- Rustic Luxe Kitchen Garden by Mickman Brothers: Fire, wood, metal, water, and earth all come together here to blend into a harmonious feng shui element. This contemporary, chef-inspired urban backyard mixes with wall-mounted waterfalls and a double-sided fireplace to really take you away.
- Shangri-La by NRD Landscape Design + Build: An ultimate retreat for you and your family, this space has an edible garden, custom screening, and the element of fire for extreme relaxation.
- Outdoor Ambiance by Landstyle Design + Construction: Minnesotans will take delight in this series of outdoor environments that match our ever-changing climate. There's an outdoor kitchen, a unique bar, and multiple water and fire features.
- Reflection by Gray Leaf Design: Elegance meets modern in this garden that is flexible enough to provide both relaxation and entertainment. We're talking a floating deck over a reflecting infinity pool, and custom-built furniture flanking the outdoor kitchen.
- Sustainable + Contemporary by Biota Landscape Design + Build: Contemporary design married sustainability for this garden, boasting a traditional pergola with a series of unique water elements as a beautiful example of how to capture rainwater.
- Fabulous Formality With A Twist by Oflora Garden: International flair is alive and well here, with a labyrinth leading you through hedges of compact dwarf conifers to a patio surrounded with red and yellow tulips, and stunning contemporary outdoor sculptures.

The
OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show falls during the
first weekend of spring, and we’re celebrating the season with blooms,
butterflies and building outdoor living spaces for the whole family. Join us
March 21-23 at Oklahoma
State Fair
Park
Some of this year’s features include:
- HGTV’s
- Storm Shelter Feature – With storm season right around the corner, the Show will feature nearly 20 storm shelter companies allowing Oklahomans to shop and compare in one location. A storm shelter scavenger hunt will make comparing entertaining and will offer shelter accessories and safety items as prizes.
- Butterfly House and
- Disaster Preparedness Education, Red Cross – Show attendees can learn how to build a disaster preparedness kit and develop an action plan for their family by taking part in the American Red Cross of Central Oklahoma’s disaster preparedness education. Activities will be offered to help make disaster training enjoyable and less intimidating for children. The Red Cross will also provide information about storm shelter grants and funding for homeowners trying to rebuild from the 2013 storms.
- Outdoor Living Space
and Landscapes –
Pergola Supreme will offer landscape
inspiration with two outdoor kitchens, a custom pergola and pavilion,
waterfalls, fire pits and a stained concrete farmhouse table. Additionally, Tony’s Tree Plantation will be offering education
on trees native to
- Grill-It Stage – The outdoor kitchen stage will feature live cooking demonstrations using the latest in grilling technology. Chefs will share recipes for quick and easy family meals as well as demonstrate how to use the Green Egg and pellet grills to cook traditional grilled foods and non-traditional fare like grilled pizzas and pies. Attendees can sample the meals as they learn tips to make their next outdoor barbeque a hit.
- Plaza Palooza – The outdoor plaza will include a variety of entertainment including wine tastings, live music, a children’s playground and plant sale.

To help storm victims in their efforts to rebuild, Moore residents will receive free admission to the OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show all weekend with a valid Oklahoma driver’s license with a Moore address. All Oklahoma teachers will receive free admission to the show on Friday only with a valid school ID.

Justin Cave,
star of HGTV’s “Groundbreakers,” has
been digging in the dirt since he was a teenager at a landscaping company
dragging water hoses to flower beds. He grew up to own a successful landscaping
company, host a popular outdoor living television show and travel nationwide
delivering landscape presentations, but his passion is still rooted in the
basics of outdoor design. At this year’s OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show
March 21-23, Justin will plant ideas to upgrade outdoor spaces starting from
the ground up.
Start
with a Plan
Do
you envision a pergola, a seating area surrounding a fire pit and maybe a water
feature? Or is a simple patio and a new sod lawn more your speed? Regardless of
the budget and experience-level, Justin is confident that you can have the
outdoor living area of your dreams, and he says starting with a good foundation
and a realistic budget is critical to the plan’s success.
“The two most important things to do
before starting a landscaping plan are to assess your wants and needs and
establish a budget,” Justin says. “Understanding these things can help you
create an outdoor space you and your family can really enjoy.”
Low
Cost, High Style
No
matter what your budget or style might be, container gardening is one of
Justin’s easiest and most cost-effective tips to bring style to your landscape.
By mixing the soft edges of foliage and flowers with the hard smooth surfaces
of pots or containers, these inexpensive gardens can pay major visual dividends
in any garden.
Justin
says, “Framing a door or the steps of a front porch with two container gardens
is an easy way to add big impact to your home’s curb appeal without spending a
lot of money. One key to making an eye-catching container garden is using a
plant with foliage that spills over the edge, like a vine.”
Shine
Some Light
Strategic
lighting is another landscaping technique Justin likes to use in landscape
design, no matter if the budget is high-end or cost-conscious. With inexpensive
low-energy LED light bulbs and a rainbow of color options, landscaping at night
is a trend that is here to stay, according to Justin.
“Landscaping
doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. Highlighting an ornamental tree or
showcasing interesting architecture can add a lot of appeal to the landscape,
especially at night.”

Sustainable
Trends, Surprising Beauty
For Daniel Meunier, owner of Laurel Leaf Landscape in Edmond,
creating surprising landscapes is one of his passions. His sustainable
landscapes – designed with unique varieties salvia, sedums, lantana, euonymus
and other colorful plants – prove that native and drought-tolerant gardens can
include more than prairie grass and wildflowers as well as provide four-season
interest.
“You can leave for vacation and not fear that you’ll
come home to a burial ground of foliage,” Daniel said.
Daniel also stays on top of landscaping trends by
creating his own hypertufa pots as well as framed, hanging planters called living walls, similar to
ones featured on Pinterest
and in gardening magazines.
“These pieces are living, changing art,” Daniel said.
“They transform a plain outdoor space into a garden art gallery.”
Expect the
Unexpected
At 9Design in
Edmond, Jodie Russell and his team also look out for new landscaping styles.
From major outdoor features like unusually shaped pools, show-stopping cabanas
and full-scale outdoor kitchens, 9Design takes landscaping to the next level.
“I try to push my clients toward the unexpected,” Jodie said. “Pool maintenance may seem too overwhelming for some clients, so a splash pad could be a better option. Plus it’s a fun element that not everybody has in their backyard.”
9Design also helps clients with simple, low-cost tricks to keep their gardens interesting. “Mix in evergreen plants for a surprisingly pretty
garden in the winter. Even though plants like nandinas seem simple, their
changing color and lush foliage keep the garden looking attractive all year.”

Sometimes a change in landscape can alter your whole
lifestyle. Bill Herron, owner of Pergola Supreme, consistently hears from clients who have added a pergola, gazebo
or pavilion and are surprised by the additional advantages of their new outdoor
space.

you have right there at home, while adding value to our home at the same time,” Bill said. “I joke with my clients that they can save money by

With some of the best outdoor grooming and gardening talent set to converge under one roof for the BC Home + Garden Show from February 20-24 at BC Place, it’s sure to be the go-to spot for both expertly tended spaces and expert advice on all things outdoors. But while they’re all in once place, we also thought it’d be nice to have some friendly competition between the cream of the crop.
Enter Deck Wars, a live version of the HGTV smash hit happening Saturday, February 23 at 4 p.m. The province’s top landscaping companies will put their deck-building skills to the test, all to be judged by Paul Lafrance, popular HGTV host of Decked Out, Deck Wars and the brand-new series Disaster Decks. Outdoor spaces are bound to go big, bold and utterly outlandish as these landscapers try to build they way to bragging rights!
