What is it about springtime that signals the start of DIY season? Yes, there are many who undertake projects all year long, but for some reason there seems to be a flurry of home improvement activity as the temperature begins to rise. Perhaps it's the bright spring sunshine illuminating your dated decor, or the prevalence of inspiring spring colors, patterns, and trends, or maybe we're all just feeling invigorated after a long winter's rest. Regardless of your motivations, we're excited to share some new projects to help cultivate your DIY ambitions. We know that starting a DIY entirely from scratch can be a lot of work and usually requires a certain level of skill that not every homeowner possesses. So we decided to share our 10 favorite IKEA hacks - simple projects you can try to make your otherwise conventional IKEA furniture look more beautiful and luxurious. Entryway Table - Just because a piece of IKEA furniture doesn't fit your exact requirements when you first buy it, doesn't mean you can't make it work. Using paint and a little carpentry, The Sweet Beast turned this shelf into the perfect entryway table. Get the full tutorial here.
Tote - Ok, so this isn't exactly for your home, but the hack from Melissa Esplin was so creative we had to share it. I guess what we're trying to say is, we totally love this tote. It's more complex than the other hacks we've shared, but the end result is so stunning you won't believe this bag was once a pillow case. Get the full tutorial here.

Try turning an ordinary ceiling in your family or living room to extraordinary with the addition of faux beams. This project isn’t for the timid; it requires some work, skill and above all a sense of adventure. The results are one that will enhance your living spaces for years to come, and you did it yourself.

Shopping List:
Depending on the beam size, pine lumber ranging from 1’ x 6’ to 1’ x 10’s.
Materials on hand:
- Compound Miter Saw
- Drill with drill bits
- Carpenters square
- Level (laser level would be ideal)
- Pencil
- 4 inch long 1/4 inch toggle bolts
- Nail gun and compressor
- Paint and paint brushes
This project is going to take a little help. It requires lifting the lumber up onto the ceiling, while one person holds the lumber, the other will attach it.
Instructions:
Step 1 - Determine the size of the beam. For
the photo, we selected 1’ x 4’s for the sides and 1’ x 8’s for the cover of the
beam. Measure the room and purchase enough lumber to do the number of beams you
decide.
Step 2 - Locate where the beams will be placed. Evenly divide the ceiling so that there is equal distance between the beams. Lay out the location of each beam by using a carpenters square (placed against the side wall to make sure that the beams run square) and a level to lay out the line, marking the placement of the beam with a pencil. We used a laser level to mark each beam placement. The straighter the beam the better the final results.
Step 3 - Cut blocks out of 2’ x 4’s the distance of the cover of the beam. If you select a 1’ x 6’ the blocks should be the width of that board. Depending on the length of the beam you will need at least 4 blocks for every 10 feet of beam.
Step 4 - Drill pilot holes into the block so that the toggle bolt can be pushed through the pilot hole.
Step 5 - At the end of each beam placement and along the beam line, secure the blocks to the ceiling, by marking the placement by pushing an awl through the block pilot hole. Drill a pilot hole into the ceiling then secure the block to the ceiling using the toggle. The blocks should be perpendicular to the beam line.
Step 6 - Cut the side pieces of the beam to length. For long beams, use several sections for the run of the beam. For the photo, the beams are constructed with 2 pieces of 1’ x 4’ per side. Cut the lumber to length using the miter saw.
Step 7 - Attach the side pieces to the blocks using a nail gun. (If more than one side piece is used, make sure that a block is located where the two side pieces will be joined. Also miter the ends of the side pieces to create a clean joint.)
Step 8 - Cut the cover to length. Again, more than one cover piece may be used for long beams. If more than one cover piece is used, make sure to miter the ends of the cut where the two will meet to make a smoother joint.
Step 9 - Hold the cover in place and secure with the nail gun.
Step 10 - Use a 1/4” corner round along the side pieces to add finish detail and to cover any gaps between the ceiling and the beam. Cut to length and install using the nail gun.
Step 11 - Paint and technique the beam to the color of your choice. Basically, you are creating a long box that will be installed to the ceiling. If you are lucky enough to find the ceiling joist and can secure the blocks to them, that would be great, but it seems like that never happens. Just make sure that you have enough blocks per beam and that where joints meets there is always a block.

The Jacksonville Home + Patio Show returns to downtown's Prime Osborne Convention Center October 2-5, 2014. The highly anticipated annual event will fill every inch of the facility with remodeling and home improvement ideas, interior design advice, cooking demonstrations, DIY tips and activities, interactive seminars, and the hottest new products. It's a lot to take in, so we made a list of the top ten things you cannot miss at the show. Check it out below.
1. The Fabulous Beekman Boys - Dr. Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell traded in the big city life in Manhattan to become goat farmers in rural upstate New York. The duo won the 21st season of CBS' The Amazing Race, and have grabbed life by the horns to find adventure in every experience ever since. They'll be gracing the Fresh Ideas Stage Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
2. Recipe Hacker, Todd Wilbur - Top Secret Recipes cookbook author Todd Wilbur has made a career out of figuring out the highly-guarded ingredients in popular fast food and restaurant recipes. Learn how he does it, and how to start making your favorite dishes at home. Todd will be appearing on the Jacksonville Magazine Cooking Stage on Friday and Saturday.
3. John and Whitney Spinks from HGTV's Flipping The Block - This local duo was one of four couples competing on the popular new HGTV series. Each pair was put in a dingy Southern California condo they renovated room by room on a $37,000 budget in a quest to "flip" the final product for the biggest profit. The Spinks will share behind-the-scenes secrets and tips from the show on the Fresh Ideas Stage on Saturday and Sunday.
4. Keep Calm & DIY - Back by popular demand, Florida local Chris "The DIY Guy" Tice returns to the show with project demonstrations four times daily, teaching guests how to upcycle and repurpose items into useful pieces for their home.
5. Drab to Fab Interior Design - Local interior designers Becky Harmon and Sandra Millis will show guests how to take lackluster interiors from drab to fab. Learn the key elements of home design and decor, and how to pull a room together on a budget. Look for these design darlings on the Fresh Ideas Stage throughout the show.
6. Food Inspiration and Recipe Ideas - Calling all foodies! The kitchen is typically one of the busiest rooms in the house, and it's definitely one of the biggest features at the show. On the Jacksonville Magazine Cooking Stage guests can take in daily cooking classes from the area's top chefs, including Blue Bamboo, Potter's House Soul Food Bistro, BlackFinn Ameripub, Black Sheep and more. Also, returning this year is the popular Food Truck Rally on Sunday!
7. Furniture for a Cause - The show's charity partner is The Arc, Jacksonville. Through their Transformabilities program, The Arc's participants create functional, aesthetically pleasing furniture from discarded items like pallets, reclaimed wood, and more. These items will be available for purchase at the show, with the option of having custom furniture created as well. On Sunday, The Arc is bringing out the always fun Jax Rollergirls for a demonstration of their Running With the Bulls 5K.
8. Fresh Ideas Stage - Over all four days of the show, the Fresh Ideas Stage will feature celebrity and expert presentations and seminars on remodeling, renovation, decor, spring gardening, and outdoor projects. Check out our complete stage schedule for more information.
