Does winter’s imminent approach have you ready to hibernate?
Would you rather flee than ski when you see snow? Don’t worry, you aren’t
alone. For every person that loves making snowmen and sledding down big hills,
there’s someone who’d rather stay inside with some cocoa and a good book. If
early nights, chilly winds, and blustery days turn you into a hermit, make sure
you’ve got the coziest space to hide out in. We’ve got four tips to transform
your bedroom decor and keep you cozy and warm until June. Here’s what you need
for a long winter’s nap.
Warm Palette – Rich
hues like rose gold, copper, and gray are what your bedroom needs this winter.
They’re pleasing to the eye, not too bright or dark, and using them in a
monochromatic color scheme will help make your space seem larger. We especially
love the rose gold in the image below. This luxurious shade is a fun step away
from the traditional grays that have dominated most color palettes, while still
letting you enjoy all the advantages of a more subtle scheme.

Soft Lighting – Since
it gets dark much earlier in the winter, creating a cozy space during this
season is all about finding the right lighting. Anything too intense can be
jarring, but you run the risk of making things gloomy if you choose something too
dim. We’re a fan of these sweet fixtures. Their industrial aesthetic adds a
sense of modernity to the space, and will keep things bright without being too
overpowering.

Plush Textiles – Soft,
thick carpeting, bedding, and pillows all contribute to a cozy space. You want
to create an environment you can easily curl up in, and plush textiles all lend
themselves to this goal. These luxurious elements help eliminate the rough
edges of the room, and subsequently the world, making it easier to drift to
sleep.

Rustic Accents – There’s
something about exposed beams and bricks that make us want to get under a
blanket and read Dickens. Maybe not everyone has this response, but we feel
like it’s pretty universal. Using simple accents takes us back to a simpler
time, and invites a sense of coziness and comfort into a room.

We hope these ideas help you create a comfortable, cozy
bedroom this winter. If you refresh your bedroom decor for the season, make
sure to share snaps of your new space with us! Tweet or Instagram @HomeShows your
pictures with the hashtag #WinterWonderland – we’d love to see what you create!

Whatever your style, your bedroom should act as an escape, a place where you can put your feet up and relax after a long day. Need some help creating your bedroom oasis? Try some of these techniques when decorating your space.
Statement lighting fixtures. A sparkling chandelier or statement wall lights at either side of the bed are both functional lighting solutions that create a feeling of luxury in your bedroom space.
Double up on window treatments. This allows you to block out the sun on those cherished weekend sleep-in mornings, while giving you the added opportunity to layer for a more dynamic design.
Play with shapes and graphics. If you want to create an interesting space and aren't sure where to start, trying playing with shapes and bold graphics, For example, a statement, custom headboard or furniture set can do wonders for a space.
Take advantage of your view. Whether your bedroom looks out on a gorgeous mountainscape or the garden in your backyard, try reorganizing your furniture to make the view the focal point.
For more tips on how to wow guests with your next redesign, visit Mary Taggart, Editor of Ottawa At Home, at the Ottawa Home & Garden Show, March 26-29 at the EY Centre. Many home
design styles are influenced by popular fashion trends, which means the current
prevalence of and appreciation for counter culture is having an impact on our
interiors. Translation: hipster homes.
Artfully-waxed facial hair, thick-rimmed glasses, and plaid shirts are popularizing
eclectic decor. Where many opt to wear clothing reminiscent of the past,
similar motifs are expressed in the way homes are being decorated – we’re
adopting older styles and making them cool again.
Check out the
two vintage bedrooms below and let us know which you prefer: Option A’s casual cottage
chic? Or option B’s bold flavor? Where would you love to read Bukowski and
listen to music we probably don’t know about?
Option A

Option B

Our Choice:
While each
room has its own merits, we prefer Option B. We find Option A’s antique
lighting, bedside table, and portrait make it a bit more dated than we enjoy. It
evokes the 1920s where Option B has more of a 1960s feel. The fun colors and
bright patterns are balanced by the hardwood floor and white accent pieces. All
in all we think it’s a nice mix of modern and classic with some playful touches
(we love the faux skin rug).
Funky
wallpaper is gaining in popularity, so we have to ask: what do you think of
this trend? Are you excited to put a fun pattern on your walls, or do you think
this is one revived decor style that should have stayed buried? Let us know
below!

advice and inspiration make sure to check out the Marketplace Events home show

Today we’re asking you to choose between the two teenage girl bedrooms pictured below.
Option A

Option B

Which would you prefer to stay up all night talking about boys in? Whose door
would you love to slam after a rough day at school? Option A’s farmhouse chic or Option B’s classic charm?
Our Choice
We like
Option B the best. There’s some creative drama with the juxtaposition of the
mixed patterns and clean lines with the rugs, beams, and bed. As well, the
throwbacks to childhood fun littered around the room provide a comforting
element which we think is sweet. Overall we think this is a lovely space our
teenage selves would be happy in.
These gorgeous
bedrooms were both professionally designed, but we have to ask: what happens in
your home? Do you let your teen have free rein when it comes to their bedroom
decor? Or are there certain things, (like black walls), that you’d veto? Let us
know who rules the roost below. And remember, for design inspirations for your
whole home head to any of our Marketplace Events shows.
