Mother-daughter duo, Karen E Laine and Mina Starsiak are the faces of HGTV’s new show Two Chicks and a Hammer. The show is based in their hometown of Indianapolis, where they transform rundown properties into impressive urban homes, improving neighborhood all across their city.

The pair got their start in renovation after Mina purchased her first home – a shabby-chic cottage with more shab than chic and not in the best part of town. The girls decided to do most of the restoration on their own! They had so much fun that it soon became a small business. With Karen’s legal background and Mina’s mind for real estate, these brainy-babes get the job done from start to finish, and they aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.

It takes a special relationship to work so close with family, but these chicks understand that the benefits far outweigh the challenges. This powerful relationship and their unique style and willingness to work is an unstoppable combination. The chicks have stayed true to their style. Karen said, “It’s important for us to stick to timeless design choices with a fun twist that fits the vibe of the house!”

Catch Two Chicks and a Hammer on HGTV and see them live at the Deseret News Home Show! Everyone's favorite home and garden event will take over the South Towne Expo Center October 9-11, 2015. The chicks will be on the Design Stage on Friday, October 9th at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday, October 10th at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

John Gidding can simply be described as an architecture and design expert. After graduating from Yale with a BA in architecture and completing a master’s program at Harvard School of Design, you could say he has the knowledge to prove it. He has gone on to become the host of HGTV’s Curb Appeal and works to enhance the outside of a home by incorporating design techniques into the exterior space.

As owner of the New York City-based John Gidding Design Inc., John has had success with design and construction projects all around the world and he isn’t planning on scaling back any time soon.

We talked to John to about upcoming trends for this year and even tried to get some hints about this year’s Deseret News Home Show.

What are some of your favorite interior or outdoor design looks this year?

"Outdoor living is skewing away from massive planting beds and horticultural expressions to hardscapes, overhead pergolas and projections, and interesting seating styles, be it hammocks and swings or large collections of whimsical seating options. In other words, both in front and back yards, people are focusing on creating courtyards and patios with a real focus on seating and comfort. This is a huge departure from when I first started Curb Appeal and everyone would chastise me for putting a few options for seating in the fronts of homes! As for interiors, I'm in love with everything Ken Fulk is doing."

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

"I'm a modernist at heart, but the more I work, the more I'm adapting to a softer approach. Finally, the most successful tenet of modernism is open-plan living - we are no longer hampered by structure defining every space, and instead find ourselves in open floor plans that allow life to flow easily from one space to another. This is easily married with color, pattern, and comfort; elements which mean more and more to me with each project."

What is one piece of advice you would give a homeowner who wants to improve the look and feel of their space?

"The key to improving the look and feel of your space is to identify needs that will be newly met by the redesign. If all you're looking to do is breathe new life into your home, playing with fabrics and colors will be the least expensive and most effective way to do it - but if you want to take your project to new heights, identify some needs you've always had (need more storage? more seating? more light?) and make the design address your needs if you want your project to be 'next level'."

Since you’ve been to Salt Lake before, is there anything you love about the city, or is there anything you would like to experience while you’re here?

"I love SLC because of the people. I've met some life-long friends there and look forward to visiting every time. I'm definitely going to stop by to check out the latest pieces by The Mandate Press when I'm there - I've always been a huge fan of letterpress artwork and one of the foremost studios in the country is in SLC."

Join John Gidding at the Deseret News Home Show October 9-11, 2015. John will be appearing live on the Design Stage on Friday, October 9th at 7pm and Saturday, October 10th at 3pm. Don't miss him!

This Father's Day treat Dad to a kitchen upgrade. With a little help from the folks at Klein's Custom Countertops you can make a substantial impact and transform your kitchen without undertaking a huge project. Don't overhaul your kitchen or replace costly appliances, simply redo your countertops. Using state of the art technology combined with quality craftsmanship done by people who care about what they do, Klein's will custom manufacture and install your countertops to your specifications.

We sat down with the Klein's Custom Countertops team to talk about their services, how they help homeowners, and what they can do for your kitchen. Check it out below.

What are your featured products this season?
"Pental Quartz, Silestone Quartz, and Dekton Ultraompact Surfacing."

What home design and decor trends are you anticipating for the rest of 2015?
"Individual styles. Whites, marble looking patterns, grays and neutrals. Simple edges."

What advice would you give homeowners?
"Follow your heart. If you like it, that's all that matters. Never worry about what anyone else thinks."

Is there any additional info you'd like to give homeowners?
"It is our promise to our customer to show through service and quality, that the value of our products will be greater than that of any other purchase they could make for their home. No gimmicks, no sales, just a fair price, always. Klein's believes that if you put something on sale, it was too expensive to begin with."

Being a Dad can sometimes be a thankless job. This Father's Day say thank you with a water storage tank. Is it a traditional gift? No. Is it a useful and necessary product that your Dad needs? Yes. We chatted with the folks at WaterPrepared about how water tanks factor into emergency preparedness and the difference they can make in a natural disaster. Check out our interview below to learn more about this important product.

What are your featured products this season?
"160 Gallon Water Storage Tanks."

What can we look forward to from you at the Deseret News Home Show?
"We've recently created a 100 gallon stackable tank that allows people to build up their storage with a smaller investment."

What home design and decor trends are you anticipating for the rest of 2015?
"Emergency preparedness is growing. It certainly isn't design and decor, but with growing awareness and increased natural disasters, more homeowners will be looking to have peace of mind in the event of an emergency."

What inspires your products?
"Initially, it was frustration. There wasn't a residential water storage company that made emergency water storage easy or convenient. Now, it's helping to prepare homeowners for disasters."

What is your favorite part of the Deseret News Home Show?
"What love the small 'what the?!' products. Things you only see at shows. And presentations by great performers."

What advice would you give homeowners?
"Don't be impatient. Often the saying 'you pay for what you get' is true when it comes to your home. Don't settle, it's worth the wait to save and get the right product the first time. And don't forget about what's important, a house is a place to keep your family safe."

We hope this helps you get a jump on your Father's Day shopping. Need more ideas? Make sure to watch your inbox for our Father's Day Gift Guide! If you aren't already receiving our community emails, subscribe now. We'll send you timely, valuable info as well as exclusive ticket deals and more.

Interested in spicing up your dishes and bringing more life and freshness into your food? Get inspiration from The Fabulous Beekman Boys and the things they keep in their kitchen that add a little wow to each plate. Check out the top ten culinary necessities Dr. Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell can't live without, and learn why they make such a difference.

1. Immersion Blender: We make a lot of soups, many of which need to be pureed. Transferring the mixture to a food processor is not only messy, but can be dangerous if the mixture is still hot. An immersion blender takes care of both of those problems.

2. Lemons, Lemons, Lemons: We make sure we’re never out of lemons. We use the zest to garnish and brighten the flavor of all sorts of dishes. If we don’t need the juice right away, we freeze it in ice cube trays. And we don’t even throw away the juiced carcass; we use them with salt as an easy way to keep our copper polished.

3. Demitasse Saucer: No cup necessary. No, we’re not being precious. For years we would get annoyed by the ground pepper “footprint” left underneath the pepper grinder no matter how well we would shake it after use. Now we set it on a random demitasse saucer we found at a flea market, which is the perfect small size not to take up more counter space but still capture the spilled pepper.

4. Panko: Better than breadcrumbs, and now readily available in most grocery stores.

5. Instant Tapioca: We feel confident enough to settle the flour vs. cornstarch thickener debate once and for all: neither work as well as instant tapioca to thicken fruit for pies and sauces.

6. Corn Meal: We like to add a little corn meal to pie crusts and other cold-weather baked good. It adds a flavor and texture that using 100% flour can lack.

7. Real Cultured Butter: For greasing baking pans and sautéing vegetables, regular grocery store butter is fine. But when baking desserts, real cultured (often European branded) butter adds a much richer flavor. And if you’re taking the time to bake from scratch, make it count. Check your farmer’s market for local sources.

8. Plain Yogurt: When a dessert recipe calls for whole milk, we almost always substitute yogurt or sour cream for a portion of it. If you get the chance to add more flavor to something, why wouldn’t you take it?

9. Beekman 1802 Apron: This might seem self-serving, but we designed our apron to fulfill a need we couldn’t find elsewhere. Our apron has two thermal-resistant pockets sewn into the hem, so there’s no more looking for potholders.

10. Nylon Pan Scrapers: Much easier to use and longer-lasting than steel wool pads.

To get more tips for simple cooking that tastes great, and for getting more involved in the farm-to-table movement, make sure to see The Fabulous Beekman Boys at the Deseret News Home Show, October 10-12 at the South Towne Expo Center. Whether you’re preparing to put your house on the market or simply want to upgrade and improve its look and feel, boosting curb appeal is the best place to start. Curb appeal is the message your house sends to those who view it. It can also transform your house into a much more inviting and warm home. If you are preparing to sell, improving the exterior is relatively inexpensive but extremely effective.

Cynthia Bee of Vintage Bee Paint is an expert in DIY home transformation, and she is excited to share advice on boosting curb appeal for your own home. She'll be presenting on everyday curb appeal at the Deseret News Home Show. Join her on the Design Stage on Saturday, October 11th and Sunday, October 12th to get advice for boosting your curb appeal on a budget and improving the facade of your home. But before you see Cynthia at the show, we asked her for some quick clues to a cuter curb. Get five simple tips below, then head to the show for more inspiration.

1. Play with the entryway - Creating a front door focal point that is both beautiful and functional is the number one way to boost curb appeal on a budget. Add a fresh coat of paint to the door - even consider a vibrant pop of color - and repair any imperfections on or around the door. Also experiment with decor, such as wreaths, plants on the stoop, interesting fixtures and seating near the front door, to create an inviting entryway even before setting foot inside.

2. Perfect pathway - A messy or unfinished pathway to the front door can send the wrong message. The path to the entryway should separate the driveway from the front lawn and the front lawn from the front door. Adding exterior ground lighting to illuminate the walkway or placing bushes and potted plants is a simple way to create a distinct separation and improve the overall appearance of the front of your home.

3. Front yard seating - If your front porch or entryway is fairly small, you might want to consider designating a portion of lawn as an outdoor seating space. Replacing a patch of lawn with concrete tiles or gravel and placing colorful chairs and even a small table within that space can transform the front of your home. This curb appeal option is a bit pricier than others, but the return on investment is potentially huge.

4. Revive planter beds - The appearance of the front garden can really work in your favor when boosting curb appeal. Begin pruning and weeding old planter beds and add new plants where they are needed. It may be helpful to consult with a landscaping expert, even if you do all the labor yourself. He or she can offer advice about the best plant based on the specifics of your yard and your desired look. Also, consider upgrading the borders of your garden beds to stone or decorative cast concrete.

5. Replace gutters and downspouts - If the gutter system on your home is old and in need of repair, it should be replaced immediately. Nothing decreases curb appeal faster than rusty or damaged gutters and chipped downspouts.  It’s also important to consider the efficiency of water transfer from your roof through the drainage system. New and reliable gutters and downspouts help maintain the structure of the home.

In 2008, Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell purchased a beautiful neighborhood farm in upstate New York for weekend getaways to relax and refine their gardening skills. At the time, both were leading busy lives in New York City—Brent was a geriatrician turned vice president of a health and wellness magazine, and Josh was a former advertising executive and New York Times bestselling author. During the recession, both men were hit hard and were forced to make an important decision about their futures in the city. Fortunately, this difficult time only brought Brent and Josh closer and served as the catalyst to finally start their own business with the Beekman farm as the foundation. From that moment on and with the support of many in the community, Brent and Josh inspired a movement in seasonal living.

We're thrilled to have Brent and Josh, or The Fabulous Beekman Boys as they're better known on their hit Cooking Channel show, joining us at the Deseret News Home Show. These city-meets-country charmers will be appearing live on the Kitchen Stage to talk about the farm-to-table movement, living seasonally, and creating traditional, wholesome, delicious dishes. But before you see them at the show, get to know the boys a little better with our brief interview below.

Three Questions for the Beekman Boys

Marketplace Events (MPE): How have your lives changed since moving out of New York City to the Beekman Farm in a much smaller community?
  • Beekman Boys (BB): "With our careers in the city, we were merely part of the daily grind. Days were indistinguishable, and we had a tendency to take things for granted. Life on the farm has taught us the pleasures of seasonal living, delayed gratification, and truly appreciating what we have around us."
MPE: What is one of the most memorable moments from filming The Fabulous Beekman Boys?
  • BB: "The most memorable experience for us is watching how the show has changed our little community of 547 people in Sharon Springs. We have annual Harvest Festivals that now bring over 12,000 new “friends and neighbors” into our community each autumn."
MPE: What will both of you discuss on stage at the Deseret News Home Show in Salt Lake City?
  • BB: "We’ll discuss how our life together on the farm inspires everything we create and design - from our recipes to our beauty products to our furniture collection. We also want to inspire the Salt Lake audience to visit our little community in Sharon Springs."

Fall is the perfect time for good company and plenty of comfort food, which gives you an excellent excuse to plan out a fall-themed gathering. What better way to showcase the changing of the season than to create a festive tablescape for a fall holiday or casual dinner party?

Here are some tablescape tips and tricks for your next gathering:

1. Gather inspiration from nature - The best way to create a unique and seasonal tablescape is to follow nature’s lead. In the cooler months of the year, gather fall and winter foliage. Go out and explore your own backyard and incorporate the items you find into your tablescape theme. Also, build the color scheme around what you see in nature. Deep, rich, and vibrant colors are perfect for fall, and cool blues and grays make a beautiful setting during winter.

2. Consider scale and functionality - Large, dramatic centerpieces look stunning on first appearance, but they aren’t necessarily practical if you and your guests are sitting down to an intimate dinner party. Consider the type of atmosphere you want to create at your get together. Larger centerpieces are ideal if you want to create a setting that promotes mingling and movement. However, smaller scale pieces, such as tea lights and short vases, can be equally impressive for a sit-down meal with friends and family.

3. Take inventory of items you already have - For a budget-friendly, large-scale tablescape, it may be beneficial to take inventory of the items already in your possession. A collection of glass bottles or mason jars can double as beautiful flower vases and candle holders. Use a larger dinner platter for a centerpiece with candles and foliage, or create a dramatic tablescape with the plants found in your own yard. Once you have a better idea of the items already in your home, then you can create a list of items you may need to buy. You might be surprised how much money you’ll save!

4. Mix and match textures and colors - Don’t be afraid to get creative with different textures and colors on the table. If you want to play it safe for the first time around, choose one bold color to stand out from the rest of the centerpiece or select several shades of one color. However, a tablescape should be a reflection of your creativity and personal style, so mix and match until you find the perfect look for your next party.

5. Sometimes less is more - When it comes to elegant tablescapes, sometimes less is more. Subtle beauty is memorable in the best way and gives you the opportunity to focus on additional decorations around the table without overdoing it.  An intimate dinner party can feel cluttered with an overcrowded tablescape. Save the drama and glitz for holiday gatherings and themed parties.

For more tablescape ideas and inspiration make sure to visit the Table Top Masterpieces feature at the Deseret News Home Show. Local designers will be creating stunning displays that are sure to enchant at any dinner party. Participants include: Jen Scott, Sara Schmutz, Ashlee Prisbrey, Holly Moeller, Krista Dearden, and Ruthie Knudsen.

Drew Levin and Danny Perkins are the energetic and talented duo behind HGTV’s Renovate to Rent— the popular show that follows Drew and Danny as they buy old or foreclosed homes, completely renovate them, and then rent them out for top dollar. As a real estate agent, Drew understands the ins and outs of buying and selling homes, and Danny, a skillful general contractor, revives worn out spaces to put back in the market. After the two became friends while attending the University of Florida, they quickly recognized their shared goals and complementing talents, which eventually turned into a successful business plan.

We're thrilled to have Drew and Danny joining us at the Deseret News Home Show, October 10-12 at the South Towne Expo Center. They'll be gracing the Design Stage on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to share expert advice on the smartest ways to shop for a property and helpful tips when renovating a home, as well as stories about their ridiculous behind-the-scenes antics. But before you see them at the show, get to know this dynamic duo below.

Five Questions for Drew and Danny

Marketplace Events (MPE): What makes you two a great team when it comes to your business?
  • Renovate to Rent (RR): "There are several reasons we make a great team. First and foremost, both of us are incredibly competitive. The competitiveness cultivates a motivating and dependable work environment. Secondly, our goals and priorities are always aligned, and we don’t allow our egos to get in the way of accomplishing those goals. Finally, we have a very different skill set - I am more of a visionary, and Danny is more of an operator. While I am thinking about what’s next, Danny is making sure everything is taken care of within the business today."
MPE: What is the best part of the home renovation process?
  • RR: "It’s hard to pinpoint just one part of the home renovation process that we can call the best. However, the planning stage always comes to mind. It’s very fun to be able to let the creative juices flow and come up with the best plan for each new property. That being said, a close second would, of course, be the finished product. It’s such a great feeling to see your ideas come to reality and the reactions of those who get to live in those spaces."
MPE: Drew - What is one piece of advice you would give someone searching for a home to rent or buy?
  • RR: "When searching for a home, it is incredibly important to have a clear vision of what you want. I can’t tell you how many people lack clarity when looking for a property to buy. In my opinion, logic is much greater than emotion. Try not to allow emotion to cloud your decision making process."
MPE: Danny - What is one piece of advice you would give a homeowner who wants to renovate?
  • RR: "The best piece of advice during the renovation process is to pick the right contractor. It takes teamwork and communication from both you and the contractor, so hiring someone you trust will make all the difference. It’s especially important that there is full transparency during the process. We often recommend homeowners get an itemized budget from their contractors to see exactly where their money is being spent."

This year at the Deseret News Home Show, we'll be bringing you some fabulous do-it-yourself ideas! Come check out our skilled experts on stage, they'll inspire you to decorate, renovate, and refresh your home both simply and creatively!

To prepare you for the show, we're bringing you a tutorial for these darling fabric pumpkins.  Fun and easy to make, the key to making these is to pick unexpected fabric combinations that will really pop in your home.

Here’s what you need:

    time to sew: none
  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Straight edge ruler
  • Yarn
  • Embroidery Floss
  • Tape measure
  • Polyester Fiberfill
  • Embroidery needles
  • Long embroidery needle
  • Sewing machine (optional)
  • Hot glue gun (optional)

Directions:

The size of your fabric should be twice as long as it is wide.. i.e. a 6"x12", or a 9"x18", etc. I made some very small pumpkins and my largest is a finished size of around 12"x12". A grouping of several sizes makes for a great table centerpiece, or put them on a shelf, etc.\

Once you've cut your fabric, fold it in half so that the wrong side of the fabric is on the outside.
Sew down the side opposite the fold.

Use a longer stitch to sew along one of the other open sides so you can gather the fabric to close that end.
Flip fabric right side out and stuff with polyester fiberfill (the pumpkins look better the fuller they are).
Hand stitch/gather shut the remaining open end.

To create the creases/sections found in real pumpkins, use yarn or embroidery floss.
Stick your needle with the yarn or embroidery floss in the center of the pumpkin and pull needle through to the other side.

Now you're going to pull your needle and yarn down and back through the bottom of your pumpkin, and repeat all the way around (I did this 3-4 times depending on the size of the pumpkin). Up through the bottom, through the top, back down and up through the bottom, through the top, etc.

Pull tightly as you go around. The tighter you pull; you'll get more defined the "sections" around your pumpkin will be.

When you have created your desired amount of sections, tie off the yarn or embroidery thread.

To create a stem, simply take a different/contrasting fabric and sew a stem shape (“U” shape) with the right sides of the fabric together. The fatter the stem, the easier it will be to flip right side out and fill with Polyester Fiberfill.

Turn stem right side out and fill, then stitch the open end of stem shu
t.  Hot glue or stitch the stem to the pumpkin

In September 2011, One Sweet Slice won the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars (Star Wars episode), Best of State for 2013 and Best of Utah by City Weekly 2013. Owner Janell Brown started baking cakes as a hobby 9 years. This hobby quickly turned into a refined talent and soon a business.

As the cake requests increased, Janell's husband Trent designed and began marketing a website so customers could find basic information on the company and its products. In 2011, due to high demand, Janell and Trent decided to open their first storefront in South Jordan Utah. As the brand continued to grow, they opened their second location in Sandy, Utah in April 2013.

Janell will join us at the Deseret News Home Show on the kitchen stage October 11th at 5pm and 12th at 3pm.

Ingredients
Wire Whisk: Stainless stirring / cooking spoon, isolated on white background
  • Spiced Black Pepper Cupcakes:
  • 1/2 cup extra dark chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups brownie mix
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup chocolate pudding mix
  • 3 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Whipped Mascarpone Icing
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 8 ounces mascarpone, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
  • Directions
For the spiced black pepper cupcakes: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a standard muffin tin with paper liners.

Place the chocolate and water in a bowl. Let sit for 1 minute. Stir the chocolate mixture until smooth. Add the applesauce, sour cream, oil, vanilla and eggs. Beat until smooth, about 2 minutes. Add the brownie mix, flour, granulated sugar, cocoa, pudding mix, pepper, cinnamon, baking powder and salt to the chocolate mixture. Mix until combined. Scoop the batter into the muffin tin, filling each cup three-quarters full. Bake until done, 21 to 23 minutes.

For the icing: Whisk the heavy cream until stiff peaks form (be careful not to overbeat, or the cream will be grainy). In another bowl, whisk together the mascarpone and confectioners' sugar until smooth. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until combined.

Frost the cupcakes with the icing.

Opal Design Group
Brass
From decorative accents to staircase railings, brass is making its comeback this fall. Brass brings a rich, warm, and elegant feel to both modern and classic room designs. It is subtle enough to mix with other metals, but it can also provide a brilliant centerpiece in the living room or dining room.

Bold Fabrics
Whether it’s geometric-patterned pillow covers or dark floral curtains, bold fabrics are an excellent way to bring personality, color, and variety to your space. Don’t be afraid to play with colorful and elaborate fabrics in a neutral space.

High Gloss Lacquer
High gloss lacquer for furniture, kitchen cabinetry, and home accessories has risen in popularity. This finish comes in virtually any color and adds an interesting element to any room in your home. You can easily update an old piece of furniture or decorative accessory with colorful lacquer finishes.
 Emerald Green
Emerald green is Pantone’s 2013 color, and you can find it everywhere in home designs this fall. Don’t let this vivid color intimidate you! Adding pops of emerald green with throw pillows, art pieces, and tabletop accessories can bring a room to life.
Raw Style
Bringing outdoor elements into your home is a simple and beautiful trend this fall. Wood and stone surfaces and textures can naturally warm up any space while maintaining a sophisticated style.

Opal Design Group will be at the Deseret News Home Show providing personalized expert design tips.
