Five Fabulous Fall Decor Ideas

What shape is your fall decor in? That’s right, we said the f-word. With September 23rd’s arrival it’s official: fall is here. We’ve already talked about simple chores homeowners can do to protect their properties from the effects of cooler weather, but the start of fall means more than home maintenance – it’s also time to update our decor.

It’s too soon for most to go full on Halloween in their space, (if you have, no judgement from us – we’re big fans of this spooky holiday), but many will wait until closer to the 31st to light their jack-o-lanterns. So what do you do in the meantime? We’ve compiled a list of cute and clever fall decor ideas you can incorporate into your home to help get everyone in the autumnal spirit.

Pumpkin Planters – We are absolutely loving this succulent pumpkin combination. The vibrant orange of the pumpkin goes so well with the rich greens and reds of the succulents and the earthy moss they sit on. This simple craft makes for a lovely centerpiece but is also sturdy enough to be placed on your porch or walkway. What a nice way to welcome fall into your home!

Branch Out! – How cute is this foliage-inspired craft? This is a fun project for the whole family to tackle and the end result is a truly unique piece to display in your home. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Chalk-Gourds – Prefer to paint, rather than carve, your pumpkin? This DIY should be right up your alley! Instead of applying a scene or face to your gourd, use chalkboard paint. This way you can write messages and draw designs again and again (all the way through to Thanksgiving!).

Gorgeous Gourds – Set an autumnal moods in any space with these sweet candle holders. We all already know how fun it is to create displays with fall gourds; image what you could do with them if they were candle holders! Adding a little seasonal spice to your table setting will be a breeze with these guys!

Autumn Address – The mail carrier will always be able to find your house (and will leave it with lots of fall spirit) when you incorporate this playful pumpkin into your porch decor! We’re especially fond of this project because you can leave it out for so long since it’ll work well with Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations.

Favorite Things About Fall

You can't deny it any longer, as of September 23rd it's official: summer is over. That's right folks, it's finally fall. For some of you, this change of seasons might not be your favorite. We can understand that, summer is sunny and relaxing and fall is busy and cold. But fall doesn't deserve the rap it gets - it just has a hard act to follow. In fact, there are a lot of really great things that happen between September 23rd to December 21st. Don't believe us? Check out the top six things we love about fall.

1. Colors - Fall is a season that inspires rich hues and deep, earthy tones. We love spring pastels and summer's bright palette, but fall brings out such luxurious colors.

The Nightmare Before Christmas: Decorating Between Halloween & The Holidays

It’s November, which means that pumpkin you carved a few weeks ago for Halloween is starting to stink. Now it might not have fully collapsed in on itself like ours did, but we’d be surprised if it wasn’t already fairly rotten. You know what you have to do. You may have gotten attached because you did carve it and all, but it’s time to get rid of your pumpkin. However, in doing this you’re opening up a whole new can of worms: what should take its place? For most of us it’s too early to put up the holiday decorations – that comes after Thanksgiving. So how do you transition away from Halloween without going full blown winter wonderland? Consider our ideas below for late fall decorations. These seasonal pieces should have your decor covered until turkey day.

Pine Cone Garland - You don't necessarily need a mantle to decorate with these guys. We love the idea of hanging them around a door frame or banister.

We live in a highly global, increasingly smaller world. Which is a good thing for you, as this means that your home design isn't bound by borders. This fall, try injecting some bright prints from around the globe into your home decor - think throw pillows, wall decor, and decorative vases. Your space will thank you.

Tones of Turquoise
This bold hue was once saved for bathrooms alone - forget that. This year, turquoise has emerged as the reigning colour choice for daring designers. Imagine duvet covers, candle holders, kitchen accessories, and more. For an elegant touch, pair it with gold accents.

Colour Me Happy
Celosia Orange is the hottest colour for fall (literally!). This bold hue is burning up bedrooms, living rooms - even kitchens. Don't overdo it though. This bright idea can quickly go from a hot hue to a hot mess in one fell swoop. Stick to cheap 'n cheerful accessories, or for you bold types, one small accent wall. Orange you glad you listened?

Nice Tan
This fall we're seeing a resurgence of styles gone by. One of the long awaited returns is tan leather (check out this example from Urban Barn). Its warm tone is a welcome addition to any room. One suggestion: when buying leather, make sure it's top grain. That way, it will look beautiful for years to come.

Black + White
There's no denying this classic combo is here to stay. This fall we're seeing a sought-after return of simple monochromatic for the home. The deep contrast of these chic shades adds an element of sophistication to your home decor - when done in moderation, of course.

Teri's Top Trends For Fall

The Calgary Home + Design Show is taking over the BMO Centre from September 18-21, 2014! Visiting the show is the best way to find the latest trends and decor secrets for your home, but we just couldn't wait another couple of weeks. Enter show manager Teri Salazar - we caught up with her for a sneak peek at her top trend predictions for fall. Here's what she had to say!

Is this what they meant by 50 shades of grey?

1. Bright in Brass
When overdone, bright brass elements can go from trendy to tacky. Don't let that scare you off. This fall, you'll see plenty of this bold metal finish popping up in homes - think pendant lamps, sinks, and even tiling.

2. Floral Fabrications
Move over spring, fall wants its turn with floral prints! Floral fabrics are reemerging in the interior realm, bringing back this beloved retro style. What was once saved for springtime is now seen as a year-round staple in the design world.

3. Shades of Grey
Black and white has been a staple in interior design for decades, and now we're seeing them evolve. To take the edge off the intense contrast of black and white, designers are mixing in shades of grey. The result? Softer, more modern interiors.

4. Trendy Turquoise
Who can resist this rich tone? What was once saved for bathrooms and kids' bedrooms has now emerged as the hot hue to watch. You'll spot turquoise on home accents, throw pillows and charming chairs all season long. Try mixing and matching with rich gold hues for an ultra-chic palette.

5. Fresh Fabrics
Goodbye cotton, and hello velvet. People are parting with simple fabrics like cotton and linen, and moving towards richer alternatives like velvet, corduroy and suede. Texture is king for fall!
