Headboard  -This project is a little more involved than the others, but the results are stunning. If you’ve got some time to spar (or are really in the dog house) try upcycling an old headboard. Add some beauty to your bedroom and create a piece that will be around for many Valentine’s Days to come.

In just a few days, an estimated 257 million roses will be sold and delivered to sweethearts across the US for Valentine's Day. According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, 37.8% of Americans will buy flowers for Valentine's Day 2015, spending a total for 2.1 billion dollars.

It's safe to say that Valentine's Day is the Super Bowl for roses, and Birmingham's MVP of roses will be at the Birmingham Home + Garden Show to chat about this fantastic flower. Chris Van Cleave, better known to his followers as the Redneck Rosarian, appears on the Fresh Ideas Home Stage on Saturday, February 14 and Sunday, February 15.

Here's a post from his blog, The Redneck Rosarian, about growing roses in Birmingham:

I can hardly believe that it's already February! Luckily, from what I can tell, our garden has not suffered any winter damage. Usually by the end of February, we begin the pruning process. Here in Birmingham which is growing zone 8a, we prune at this time for two reasons:

  1. The threat of a heavy frost has usually past and it is safe to do so. By this time any tender new growth would not be damaged.
  2. Our annual rose show is held Mother's Day weekend at our Botanical Gardens and we want to have blooms to exhibit in the show. Not so much for a ribbon or trophy (although it would be nice to win) but as a display of what can be grown in this area.
So the preparation process begins:

  • Selecting and ordering new roses
  • Creating or doing maintenance to garden beds
  • Has my soil be tested lately?
  • Do I know how to prune my roses?
  • Are my pruners and other gardening tools clean and sharpened?

To learn more, check out Chris' blog and make sure to see him at the Birmingham Home + Garden Show. The home and garden event of the season takes over the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex, February 12 - 15, 2015. Don't have tickets yet? Get 2-for-1 on Facebook.

We can't believe Valentine's Day is next Saturday - it feels like 2015 is just flying by! If you, like so many, are experiencing one seriously busy winter, you might not have your Valentine's Day ducks (or should we say hearts) in a row. You know you should skip the traditional flowers and chocolate combination and do something more original this year, but don't have the time to come up with a creative gift idea. Don't fret - we've compiled a list of clever, easy, and fun Valentine's Day gifts you can try!

1. Mug It Out - Trying to treat a coffee or tea lover? Make them a mug! This is such a sweet and simple idea. Fill your mug with candy or their favorite type of tea or coffee to make this gift extra special.

2. Message In A Pillow - Not only is this pillow cover really cute, you can leave secret messages for your partner in it! A+ for creativity!

3. Carved Candle - Keep the flame alive with this super sweet candle. This gift is sure to have the traditional romantics swooning.

4. Warm Their Heart - These DIY heart-shaped hand warmers are almost too perfect for Valentine's Day! Give that special someone your heart to keep them warm.

5. Boozy Bouquet - Men can be difficult to shop for. If you're not sure what to get your man this year, why not try this manly bouquet? Instead of flowers, your bundle can consist of mini alcohol bottles, cigars, shot glasses, candies, hot sauce - whatever you think he'd enjoy most!

6. Love Birds - Show your sweetheart that you two are birds of a feather! Create this cute and charming love birds diorama!

7. Make A Card - It might seem like a cheesy idea, but sometimes a homemade card is one of the best things you can give! It's a handmade gift that you can write your feelings on. This is one traditional gift that'll never go out of style!

We LOVE creative minds at the KC Remodel + Garden Show. And it's hard to find anyone more creative than Leanne Lee, Diva of DIY and 2015 Home + Garden Trendsetter of the Year. Leanne will be a featured speaker on our Fresh ideas Home Stage each day of the show, where she'll share her passion for upcycling - turning trash into treasure.

With Valentine's Day just around the corner we thought we'd share one of Leanne's favorite projects: Valentine's Blocks. This project is so easy even the kids can tackle it.

Here's what you'll need:

  • 4x4x4 cubes (easily cut from a fence post you can buy at any home improvement or lumber store)
  • Spray paint in desired color
  • Valentine's Day scrapbook paper
  • Sanding block
  • Mod Podge
  • Foam brush
  • Copies of photos on cheap printer paper
  • Vinyl letters (if desired)
Directions:

Step 1: Sand corners of cubes to slightly round of edges.

Step 2: Spray cubes with spray paint. Let dry completely.
Step 3: Lightly distress blocks with sandpaper (if desired).
Step 4: Apply scrap book paper using Mod Podge. Let dry.
Step 5: Apply photocopies over scrapbook paper or paint using Mod Podge. Let dry.
Step 6: Apply vinyl letters to scrapbook paper or paint (if desired).

These adorable blocks are just one of the many creative ideas Leanne will share at the KC Remodel + Garden Show - and we guarantee you'll love them all.

With two stages packed with home and garden experts like Leanne Lee and Kevin O'Connor, host of the award-winning PBS series This Old House, this is one show you won't want to miss.

The KC Remodel + Garden Show, the region's largest home show (with over 500 exhibitors), takes over the American Royal Center February 6-8, 2015. Don't have tickets yet? Get 2-for-1 via Facebook. And remember, February 6th is Hero Day at the show. All active and retired military, fire, and police personnel receive free admission to the show on that date.
