The New Year
offers the perfect opportunity to update your living space with the latest
trends. We’ve outlined 5 of 2016’s top interior design trends to help you bring
your home into 2016!
Bring the Outside In. Maybe the simplest home trend of 2016
to incorporate into your home is the concept of bringing the outside, inside.
Be prepared to see a definite increase in plant life being brought into inside
living spaces this year. Small plants, succulents and flowers are coming in
full force, with a twist. This year, trade in the classic pots and vases for
more eclectic, creative displays. The inside plant life trend is being taken
just a few steps further by displaying the plants in everything from antique
bird cages to rustic crates and everything in-between.
Mixed Materials. In 2016, mixing design materials will
make a huge statement in any room. Don’t be afraid to pair different metals
with wood, marble or even ceramic elements! This design trend is breaking all
the rules of mixing and matching materials – and we love every bit of it.
Instead of limiting yourself to all gold accents or all wood touches, get
creative! For example, gold and silver mirrors can be perfectly balanced out by
rustic, wooden bowls or frames. By ignoring the interior design laws of mixing
materials, you’re on the fast track to the most modern living space around.

Ethnic Fabrics and Textures. Get ready; this year will see a huge
rise in the use of ethnic fabrics and textures. Design influences from across
the world have come together to bring us the inclusion of an array of different
patterns and textures into this year’s hottest designs. Aztec patterns, woven
wood furniture and colourful, bright carpets are only the beginning of this new
design trend. These new patterns and textures are sure to bring vibrancy and
life into any room!

Warm Colours. Say hello to warm-toned colours
again! 2016 is ushering in a new slough of colours to pick from when redesigning
any room in your home. From light pinks to burnt oranges, 2016 will feature
every warm, cozy colour you could ask for. We suggest using these warm-toned
colours in the “social rooms” of your home, such as living rooms, dining rooms
and kitchens, as the warmer colours evoke a comforting, welcoming feeling.

As we bid goodbye to yet another year, we set our sights on 2016 and
everything shiny and new that comes with it. Hot on our radar are 2016 design
trends, and what better way to incorporate them into your home than with a
little local expertise? We caught up with Sherri Cowlthorp, Principal Decorator
and Owner of Inclusive DesignGroup,
to get her design forecast for the New Year.
Mixed Metals: Copper, silver or gold? This year, you don’t have to decide between them. Mixing metals is all the rage for 2016, so let your imagination run wild. Pro tip: throw in some metallic shimmer for an added luxe effect.

The right furniture can change a room from dull to dynamic, from stuffy to welcoming. Bringing a touch of the outdoors in can make a room feel relaxed and cozy while still looking chic. Repurposing outdoor and rustic pieces is a huge trend right now, and even better - it's cost effective and environmentally friendly!
Consider incorporating some of the following trends into your next room design:
Natural tabletops. Creating a custom coffee table or even kitchen table out of a natural stone or wood slab is a great way to create the feeling of outdoors, inside.
Reclaimed wood pieces as art. Whether it's small "barn door" style pieces or a rust picture/window frame, these simple items can add a lot of warmth to a design. Try hanging them, or even propping them, up as an accent on side tables.
Carved wooden benches and stools. Incorporating custom carved wooden stools and benches into a design, perhaps around the kitchen table, or as accents in the living area, is an easy way to bring the outdoors in. Made of one solid piece of wood, these pieces also have the added benefit of being very durable - great for high-traffic areas.
Wooden beams. Reclaimed wood ceiling beams are a huge shabby chic trend. The beams create a feeling of warmth, while also elongating the feeling of the space.
Create contrast. Try incorporating both rustic and modern pieces into a room to create a really interesting contrast. Something like a natural dark wood coffee table in an all-white room, maybe even some chrome accents, creates a dynamic design.

At the Birmingham Home + Garden Show, the married duo will share behind-the-scenes secrets on how they renovated each room as part of their journey to "flip" the final project for the biggest profit - plus they'll give us the inside scoop on how they won so many room challenges.

We're thrilled to have nationally recognized design/build contractor and Canadian television personality, Ramsin Khachi, joining us at The Great Big Home + Garden Show. Ramsin is renowned for generating creative solutions to problems facing the modern-day client. This design expert helps others achieve timeless, elegant, and uniquely customized spaces. We caught up with Ramsin briefly before the show and asked for his take on today's design trends. Read on and his enjoy his interesting perspective.
Today we are continually bombarded with trends and fads driven by the media's recurrent pursuit of new content. It's a persistent process that can ultimately leave us questioning our investments and improvements in our homes. If I had to believe heavily in design trends, I'd say the hottest trend today is to not be trendy. The vast amount of design content available to us in the media and online has made us more confident as consumers and puts us more in touch with and makes us more proud of our personal tastes and styles. We're not afraid to make our spaces reflect our own personalities.
What I do strongly believe in is lifestyle trends. Our lifestyles have changed greatly in the past several decades. We lead busy lives, we travel more, we entertain differently, and the last thing we'd want is a home that takes up any of our most precious commodity: time. We want spaces that enhance our lifestyles - like separate mudrooms and laundry rooms, wine cellars, media rooms, useable garages, and innovative storage spaces. We look for products that work for us so that we don't find ourselves constantly working around an item's limitations. Products that can deliver performance like Cambria's non-staining and durable Quartz countertops, Schulter's superior shower waterproofing system, or Blum's ingenious cabinet hardware.
In the future, I look forward to builder's fulfilling our needs better and creating homes that meet our current and future demands. Homes that are better built, more conductive to current lifestyles, and homes that help us enjoy living our lives rather than creating more work for us.
